I keep hoping we are getting the heat out of the way early?? hey you can dream, right??Well its a sad Memorial day for us for sure. Some of you have met our little "retirement child" Izzy. She jumped out a ditch right in front of a motorcycle this afternoon. They were very nice and stopped and told us and apologized but there was no way they could avoid her. She was really like our child and will be missed greatly. At least it was fast and she didn't suffer.
banjoe, totally agree way to hot and dry this early in the season, makes me cringe for what is to come.
Love the black crested naked hooda!
Quote: absolutely, they are majestic, and hope to have some someday- your birds are stunning for sure!

Hopefully your turtle will be returned to you. He sounds huge. Have you put up "lost" signs at the local spots? Surely someone will find him.
I hope baby Lily is doing better. Wasn't aware she had been having problems. Will keep the family in prayer.Anyone heard how baby Lily is doing? Saturday Scoots said she went back into the hospital Thursday (I think) but they were hoping she would be released soon. Hope she makes it home soon & doesn't have any return visits!
Quote: Those big turtles are neat. My next door neighbor used to have turtles in her backyard. They would get out occasionally and make their way around the neighborhood. As slow as they seem, they can travel pretty far in a short amount of time. I really hope you find yours.
aint nothin as good as fried green tomatoes!!!!!!!I'm jealous picking red tomatoes!!!!! I keep going and looking, but everything (tomato wise) is still green.
Well, to be honest, I dont' remember either. I know I got royal purple and lots of variety. These are my favorite so far. If they were outside they'd be hawkbait, but they're sure pretty.Traci I vote coral blue then. I can't even remember what all colors you got from DD, but I do remember you got an assortment. The dots will disappear on the coral blues when they get there real feathers in. They may have a few dots, but won't have many.
MJ they do have nice feathering on their feet. The girls are at war over whose birds they are going to be. Thanks so much for the eggs. Don't think the girls have ever asked for Cochins but now they both love them. At least they are the favorite of today.
WOW Carl you are amazing! I knew it would be a long drawn out process but wasn't sure where to start. I would rather start with a Blue and a Birchen but do not have that option yet, unless you know someone raising large OEG that would have what I want!!! HInt Hint, Hey Micheal, we need to visit some old rooster men together!!! Thanks Carl!!!! LynnThe cross will be a mess for several generations and difficult to straighten out but can be done most likely 7-8 generations to get right. You will see some pattern and stippling in both sexes of the offspring in at least the first three generations, as well as leg color problems, eye color problems, the appearance of wing bay in males, poor hackle striping in males.
But if you want to try here is what I would do if that were my only option..
Use the Silver Duckwing male over the Brown Red females. Hatch no more than 12 F1 (first Cross) use 1 cockrell from that mating over 5-6 females from the mating.
When you mate the F1 birds select for solid black chick down, cull all the others, and hatch a lot.
When they begin to mature look for solid black legs or at least as dark as possible, select against anything with stippling or pattern appearance if possible. Use the best cockrell and 5-6 pullets from the F2 mating. Get rid of the F1 birds.
Take the best F2 male and go bck to the Brown Red females, keep the pullets and two cockrells the cockrells will be golden but will throw both Birchen and Brown Red Pullets.
Pen 1. Third genetaion Back cross golden male over Brown Red: Take a Golden Cockrell go back the Brwon Red again in one pen, keep the Bicrhen Pullets.
Pen 2 Third Generation Back cross golden male x 3 generation Birchen Pullets.
Fourth Generation
Birchen Cockrell from Pen 2 over Pullets from Pen 1. , this will be the fifth generation and likely breed relatively true with little pattern continueing to appear.

One of my Science professors at OBU had a collection of unusual turtle varieties from around the word as pets. Some were very unusual, some ugly and some beautiful. They had a concrete floored room at the back of his house with access to an outdoor sun area.
