***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Sorry to miss Newcastle tonight, they moved mom to a regular room today and think she may have had a stroke. 2 different Nerologist came in and saw her, she is having vision issues so not sure how that is going to turn out when it is time for her to go home. She can't stay by herself like she is now. Got home tonight around 5 and got birds moved around, moved guineas to a Aframe coop from their brooder. I sure hope they do good in it. They were getting to crowded in their brooder. Then moved chicks from one of the inside brooders to an outside brooder. Not sure hubby is going to get the additional Aframe tractor done before fireworks start so I may have to get creative in moving birds until July 5th gets here. Need to sell some of the chicks hatching.

Also we have a BYC'er that could use our prayers. I will not give out her name but they lost their home, barn and workshop in a fire this last week. They lost everything. I know they said their insurance is being great to help them get back on their feet. But they lost all their precious animals and everything in their home. I know we can all help them get started with their birds again once they are ready but until them please remember them in your prayers.

Well off to bed, I have a kiddo heading off to church camp tomorrow afternoon and finally got him packed so I am going to get some sleep while I can, lol.

I am so sorry about your mom. I will pray for your family, and our other BYC family you mentioned.

im so excited! had to share!

i was asked these questions for a poultry magazine, and here is my answers the writer also thinks the editor will want a photo to go with the article... wow, hopefully i'll see some commissions from it...:)

Can you tell me a little about your art business, how you got started painting poultry, how that business has grown, what you've invested in it, how you market it, your customers' reaction to your work, the costs of getting the art business off the ground? I think it would work great with the financial article!

... >>>I had just graduated from college with a degree in Graphic Design, but had studied illustration and pet portraits. We had just moved to the country and my husband, David, who had retired from the Navy suggested we get a few chickens- I have always been interested in birds and had a few rescue birds so it didn't seem unusual to me. To have a mini farm and devote myself to animal portraits. Well, 5 chickens stole my heart, and i began focusing more on them, which leaked into my art. I discovered few artists specialize in poultry. Wild birds are popular, but there was a need for poultry art... by someone who knew them as friends. I really love all animals, and paint and draw them as you would in petting them, this shows in my art, and has been welcomed by other Poultry enthusiasts. It takes time and word of mouth to become known, so while I was doing more and more poultry, I also did garden birds and pets, selling mostly over the internet. As I got involved locally with other Chicken fanciers, my art also began going with me to gatherings. Since the majority of my work is on a commission basis, the startup costs were less intensive, for supplies and packaging. The average piece takes 2-4 weeks to finish, 80 - 200 hours in real time. I usually work on multiple pieces so the work stays fresh and vibrant. The business has grown slowly until recently, as I have focussed on various breeds as well as commissions, small breed samples have become popular. The actual startup costs are difficult to determine, as much of my equipment was purchased for school. It truly is a business that can be started with minimal outlay, depending on medium. I work in pastels and acrylic, and buy supplies according to need. My studio consists of my Macintosh computer, Artisan printer- for professional quality prints and reference photos. The reaction from many clients is the work brought tears to their eyes, often the pieces are memorials, and it means alot to me that it helps them heal. For me, that is my goal, in my art. I also want to show the beauty of all poultry, many folks don't grasp the personality and love these birds have to give.<<<

It is so awesome you can do what you love! Thank you for sharing your story.

thanks! its exciting for sure, and free advertising
on the little guy with the bum leg, i've tried alot of different things, ways of taping etc, at this point he he gets around pretty fast, pushing off with that leg- it is still pliable, but when i go to tape it, it obviously is painful to mess with it- almost at the point i am thinking let him adapt and not mess with it- any other suggestions? i did read it can be caused by vitamin deficiencies of the b vit- my guess is slipped tendon?
?

I had one of my guineas with what I think was a slipped tendon. It looked just like this little one. I have seen lots of complicated methods of wrapping, and actually didn't think it would be worth trying to mess with it. But I googled it anyway, and someone said that they didn't mess with splints or anything, they just did something real simple. They had a partner help them, and they held the leg in the proper position, and kind of straightened and flexed it while pushing gently with their fingers until they felt the tendon go back into place. Then they used just a strip of tape and taped right around the hock, with no splint, just the tape, and it kept the tendon in place. Well, I thought that sounded easy enough and it couldn't hurt, so I did it. All I had on hand was electrician's tape, the shiny black stuff. I taped that guinea's leg up, put it back in the brooder, and it just walked around same as the others. I left it on for two days, took it off, and now I can't tell which guinea it was.

Mornevening all! Dakota and I had quite the day yesterday, we stopped at Guy Rose Auction and sold some eggs, then on to Carney and dropped off a coffee table for my other son, then to Marys and visited with Micheal D. and he introduced me to MacGuyver, then we headed down to Newcastle and I sold two roosters, got out bid on the other things I bid on, enjoyed some supper good BBQ Brisket and lots of BYC company , visiting with Le and Teva, Scoots, seen Marybeth, Rebecca and Marylou, and some of the other BYCers which i have not got names connected to yet, Ended up not buying anything though. Scoots want to say you run a great auction and have a wonderful family helping you, thoroughly enjoyed the brisket and had a good time. Also I gotta find out what brand of Hot Links y'all sell cause they were wonderful, have a great day all, Lynn

Dude. I really wanted to go to Newcastle. I almost went, but I was trying to work out going down to Dallas to pick up my chicks a friend hatched for me. Ended up getting too late for me to do both things, so I missed it. That brisket sounds yum. Well, at least I'll see everyone in Muskogee, right?

Got a new roof on the rent house! DH got sick from the heat in the middle of the day. Never seen him like he was today-- he is still @ the ER- enjoying rest & fluids through his IV -- he told them he was getting hungry, but they said they don't have food in the ER-- got to love Army hospitals! I told him he should have a pizza delivered then. I had some 14&15 yr old boys & both of my girls help me do the roof. After a few hours of OJT they turned into a good roofing crew & I am pretty sure they will all be hurting tomorrow.
In a chicken note, the little serama chick died & none of the silkie hens eggs have hatched. Think I am going to kick her off her nest. She has been in a rabbit hutch alone, wonder if I throw her back in her own coop if the move would be enough to break her? Or I could give her some of the eggs we are locking down in the AM. Decisions decisions oh my. I am sure DD will inform me what she thinks is best to do with her.
Thinking I need a midnight snack & then crawl into bed.
Good night all!
I hope your DH is feeling better soon.

My broody cochin hatched out three Dominiques for me, but I had a friend in Dallas with eggs in an incubator that were due to hatch the same day. The broody actually hatched a day early, but I went down to get my six other chickie doos today. Mama seemed a little bit confused, but I think she's good now.

Boy those hubbys will do anything to get out of a days work, lol. No seriously hope he is feeling better soon. Sorry about your little serama chick. When our broody hatched out chicks I ended up taking the chicks because she was not letting them out of the nest to eat or drink. When I tossed her back in her pen she went back to her same ol' self. She took a while to start laying again though.
