***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Yeah, but I'm sure someone else would like them as well. As much as I wanted to come down to NEOCS, It looks more like I won't be able to make it.

If I did make it there, it would be later in the day. How late in the day (or evening) will things still be happening there?
We'll have the barn open by 8:00 a.m. and the event is officially ending at 5:00 p.m. Our security officers go off the clock at 5:00, so I'm thinking people who still want to visit could move their party to one of the local restaurants. There are a lot of great places to eat and visit in Muskogee.

4 Guineas out of 9 born so far but we've had to peel them each out of their shell. We brought them all inside after the broodys failed meserably at hatching out the Orloff/Marans chick. Broody hens don't always do it better it seems, another myth in the chicken world. And why are people so gung-ho and obsessed with temp and humidity with an incubator and it's far from perfectly set under those messy hens?

All our guinea hatches we have had to help some out of their shells. Our first hatch we were hands off and over 1/2 had foot problems from being in the shell to long. We just hatched out 16 they are a noisy bunch, 3 are so tiny compared to the others I have them in a seperate brooder so they don't get trampled. I quit stressing over our incubator other than temp for the first 16-18 days. Then I up the humidity in the hatcher to the point it is sweating inside the window.

We just finished out hatch for today I have one in there still drying out and one egg still chirping but it isn't pipped even, I am wondering if I should just crack it open and see if it makes it I need to clean the hatcher for the next batch. But we ended up with 29 chicks out of 34 eggs so far. The other 4 eggs pipped and started zipping and then quit. So we almost had a 100% hatch I am pretty happy considering I wasn't here to make sure the humidity stayed up.

I don't feel so bad having to help these guys then. They started out under the guinea hen and something was eating them so I moved them to the incubator, then we moved them under a broody 4 days ago and moved them back to the incubator when they started pipping. Talk about human interference

But I sort of saw these as an experiment because I didn't want Guineas anyway.
I do the same thing as you with the incubator-don't even pay any attention to the humidity until day 18 then jack it up til it's sweating. I have yet to let any hatch in the 24-egg Brinsea. I've so far transferred them to the 10-egg to hatch because I can't seem to refrain from filling the 24-egg with more eggs.

LOL I just sanitized the hatcher so going to go ahead and move eggs a day early since this week might get crazy. My last guinea hatch I had one running loose in the tray in the incubator it hatched 3 days early. I bet you don't have any issues finding homes for your babies guineas are big this year since the bugs are so bad. I plan on one more guinea hatch in early July and then that will be it for us. My poor incubator is going to seem so empty once I move eggs I will only have one tray of eggs in it. I may cry once I move those to hatch next week, lol. Then of course the brooders will soon be empty too.

please continue praying for my fatherinlaw, Frank- and mother in law, barbara, he will probably have a blood transfusion tomorow, he isn't bouncing back the way the drs expected and my mother in law is exhausted from staying at his side- she is the picture of real love....

been busy trying to get stuff together for NEOCS, gettin excited- gonna be lots of fun! hard to decide which birds to bring, i need to trim things down some, but then i look at those little faces....

mostly ee mix chicks, if i can get them away from mama's, although i have a few laying hens that may come as well, nothing fancy though...

Sherri/BirdWalkFarm--the coral blue guinea eggs you gave me at POOPS hatched today. Out of the 12, 1 was clear and 1 pipped halfway and quit. I'm sure the humidity was too high, so I then chipped the rest of the pipped babes out. All of the coral blues and most of the ones I added from my own flock are doing well. Three of mine haven't even pipped (I had no idea how old the eggs were), but this is only day 26, so I'll leave them in a couple more days. However, I feel fairly sure the high humidity has killed them.

Thank you again for bringing these eggs to me!

A very nice young couple and their two children came today and bought two pairs of adult guineas from me for their hobby farm. I've given them information and encouraged them to look in on this forum, and I hope we see them here!
Betsy , that is good news . If ever you want more just let me know .

I just sold every baby chicken I own about 1 hour ago. I am baby chicken less what am I gonna do between now and the 10th I already miss them I have not been without baby chickens since February and I have not been under 100 since February. It is so quite in the house. I usually have the newly hatched in the guest bed room for a week or so them move to the brooder in the barn. It just fells like somthings missing. :(

Got a new roof on the rent house! DH got sick from the heat in the middle of the day. Never seen him like he was today-- he is still @ the ER- enjoying rest & fluids through his IV -- he told them he was getting hungry, but they said they don't have food in the ER-- got to love Army hospitals! I told him he should have a pizza delivered then. I had some 14&15 yr old boys & both of my girls help me do the roof. After a few hours of OJT they turned into a good roofing crew & I am pretty sure they will all be hurting tomorrow.
In a chicken note, the little serama chick died & none of the silkie hens eggs have hatched. Think I am going to kick her off her nest. She has been in a rabbit hutch alone, wonder if I throw her back in her own coop if the move would be enough to break her? Or I could give her some of the eggs we are locking down in the AM. Decisions decisions oh my. I am sure DD will inform me what she thinks is best to do with her.
Thinking I need a midnight snack & then crawl into bed.
Good night all!

Sorry that I didn't get around to visit with everyone at Newcastle the other night.

Teva started a new job last week and this was the last weekend we will spend together for awhile. Of course she wanted to go to an auction. Today (Sun) she was put on standby so I spent the day in Enid with her. At midnight Sun she officially went from standby to on call. We did some looking around for an acerage there so we can be close to her work.

One of the main things is that she has to be a max. of 20 miles from the yard so when she gets called she can get there fast. Basically she will work 10 on and 10 off with one day a week off but the money and benifits are good so sacrifices will be made. Her son lives in Enid so she is staying there for now. She is working for a company that delivers train crews for the UP.

Gotta say that I am proud of her for passing all of her tests with flying colors and those crews will be safer in her van then they are at home.

I'm saddened to hear of the passing of another great fancier, Forrest was a good promoter, we went to the show he held one year and it was really ran well.

Everyone that has an ill loved one I will pray that they do better.

Ok now to a brighter note. Of the eggs that we won in the raffle we had a near 100% hatch out of them. Marybeth those Mad. games have got to be the ugliest birds that I have ever seen. And I love them! I was going to tell you about it at Newcastle but after I saw the little bantam NN rooster i got tunnel vision. And yes he did go home with us.
