***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thought I would share my only 2 that hatched. the dark one I assisted, the light one hatched on his own, but has spraddle leg. Right now they are separated cause the healthy one keeps trying to eat the others splint. Tomorrow I will remove it and put them back together.

I'll get some better pics once they're back together.

Cute, what kind are they?
Americauna. They're my first 2 americauna. So far they're personality is so different from my other chicks that i've raised. They're like little puppy dogs. they follow us when we're by the aquarium, the little dark one with go so fast, that he has to flap his little wings. its so cute!

I have an Oreo update. The day he attacked me he got a temporary stay of execution only b/c I did not have my killing station completed. Gary has mostly completed it now. Anyway that day he got hit w/ whatever hard object I had handy that day, as he had every other time he has attacked me and it has not made any difference at all. He doesn't attack me everytime, but lulls me into a false sense of security then all of a sudden out of the blue ............. bam. Anyway later that day I was out in the yard / garden and while not outright attacking me again, his body language was less then submissive, so I had the water hose handy b/c I was working in the garden, it has a selection wand on it from jet to mist, so I turned that sucker on jet and any time oreo even looked in my direction and was w/i range of the water I sprayed him good (he stayed wet all day) was actually aiming for head and face (didn't care that day if I drowned him or not was so angry) anyway since that day he has been a different bird, I don't know if his stay of execution is lasting or not we'll see how it goes, but who'd a thought a water hose on a 100' day would make a more lasting impression then a piece of pipe up'side the head???

Hey Ladies, have you wondered what to do with those big ol Cucumbers that you somehow missed picking for a week??? Well i got a recipe for ya here!

This is something you can do with overgrown cucumbers that hide under leaves sometimes. I can just imagine some old homesteader wife you needed to making something out of nothing who thought up this recipe, using "Red Hots" cinnamon candy! Dee got this from a former co-worker, and it was her grandmother's recipe, somebody they called "Tat". Charlene

Tat's Cinnamon Rings

Select large, overgrown cucumbers.

Peel and slice cucumbers ½ inch thick, to make 1 gallon rings (4 lbs)

Cut out seed centers to make rings. Soak 24 hours in 1 cup lime with enough water to cover.

Drain and wash well. Soak for 3 hours in ice water. Drain again. Mix ½ cup vinegar,
1-1/2 teaspoons red food coloring, 1 teaspoon alum, and enough water to cover
cucumbers. Simmer for 2 hours at very low heat. Drain and discard water.

Mix 4 sticks cinnamon, 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup water, 5 cups sugar and 5 oz. Cinnamon Red Hot candies.

Bring mixture to a boil to dissolve sugar and candies. Add pickle rings and bring to a boil. Fill jars and add 4 whole cloves per pint jar. Adjust lids. Process 10 minutes in boiling water bath. Makes 4 to 5 pints.

And just for good measure how bout a great German Potatoe Salad recipe for those nice new red potatoes you are diggin!!!!???

German Potato Salad Recipe

2 pounds red or waxy potatoes
4 slices bacon
1 small onion, diced
1 cup chopped celery
1 dill pickle, chopped, optional
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup white wine vinegar or cider vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dry mustard, optional
Salt and pepper, to taste
In large pot, place potatoes and enough salt water to cover; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender. Drain, peel and slice. Place still-warm potatoes in bowl.
In skillet, fry bacon until crisp. Drain bacon on paper towels, then crumble and add to potatoes. Discard all but 2 tablespoons bacon fat from skillet; add onion, celery and pickle. Cook until golden. Add water, vinegar, sugar, paprika, mustard, salt and pepper; bring just to a boil.
Pour dressing over potatoes and toss gently to coat. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Cover and refrigerate leftovers.
Note: You may use cider vinegar and omit the pickle. The salad is good both warm and cold.

Have a great day!!! Lynn

Mmmm Greybear, love me some kartoffelsalade!!

Got home early again today and found Rose resting in the shade under the water mister. She is much more relaxed than yesterday, not frantic or anxious any more. Hopefully she will settle down and do well now.

This sure seems like a lot of drama for a chicken. Weird thing is in my head I know it's a chicken, I have butchered dozens, probably hundreds of them as a kid and never gave it a second thought. I think this one is so much different because I got it from someone who cared for it and feel bad that one died. It's like letting someone down in addition to losing an animal that relies on me for it's care.

I sure do appreciate all of the advice here as well as the messages with inquiries and tips.

Thanks everyone,
SDS

Kass, what beautiful chicks! I'm a bit partial to the Araucanas but the NN's have a lot more expression to their faces :)
I've heard lots to times to hose ornery roos down with water. I hope he behaves himself. He's sorta' like the BYC Mascott.
Kimbro-congrats on the babies!
And SDS, I'm glad Rose is settling in. Orpingtons and Cochins are so matronly. If Michael Jackson's mom was a chicken she'd be one of those 2 breeds.

Those little brown araucanas are about the same age as all the other chickies in the "seussers" pen, except the silver duck wing araucana she's several weeks older then all of them. Anyway even though they are about 1/2 the size of everyone it is so fun to watch them toe to toe w/ the bigger chicks for thier fair share of cukes or bugs! They think they are just as big as anyone out there.
