***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Trying to psych myself up to go into work early. There is a big trailer that I have to get the brakes working on and I would rather not do it in the afternoon.

The heat is getting the birds down as well. The roosters are silent and it is nearly 5am, they are an hour late getting up.

Well phone is charged so it's time to start the day. Stay cool everyone.

Well, with all the processing I have been doing this summer and the recent processing equipment acquisitions, I thought I would share the below thread with my fellow Okies.

One of my goals is to get as many people processing and selling meat birds in Oklahoma as I can. I highly recommend the links in that thread to folks who are considering it.

Hope everyone has a great day and safe day. Don't be out working or walking in this heat unless you have no other choice.

Just came in from the garden. Was mulching the corn & checking on things. Think I am goin to lose about 50% of the new tomato seedlings. The t-tape has been experiencing lots of breakage (groundhogs). One day of dry ground is enough to take out a new seedling. The lines are repaired & watered well will give them a while to see if they rebound but the leaves are looking sad & some plants were completely crispy. The transplants that had water are thriving.

Buster it's awesome that you are going to be able to grow your meat business. I am sure 1000 birds a yr won't put a dent in the local demand, so there is for sure room for others to do the same. Perhaps in the future a few others could work with you & maybe raise them at their own place & you process them? As the demand grows that would help work around the 1000 bird limit, because each grower could raise 1000 birds & you could still profit from doing the processing & they could process from the work of growing them.

Killed my first snake in Blanchard today - after it took another life, but got it at last now getting ready for the next one. Prep and seeing the holes in my system to get the next one quick and early.

Morning, Okies!

Buster - Thanks for posting the links on processing.

Kass - That's so neat about the scaleless NN. It would be strange but interesting to have a flock of scaleless birds.

I'm on my way back outside. Everyone has food and water, but I want to make mud puddles for each pen. School starts for me this Friday (professional development), so I'm going to take advantage of as much farm time as possible. If anyone is looking for a doe in milk, DH is thinking I should sell one of mine before the end of August. He thinks I won't have enough time to milk there goats, feed forty chickens, and teach High School classes. If anyone is interested, send me a PM. I don't want to list my girls on CL. If I must give one up, I want her to go to someone who will take care of her; someone I know. Each doe is giving me about 1/2 a gallon per day. Two are pure bred La Mancha, and one is a La Mancha X Alpine. All three have tiny little ears.

Wear a hat if you're outside today. It's going to be another scorcher.

SERIOUS QUESTION! I bought a hen on saturday, one of her eyes is completely cloudy white. Looks like her pupil is not completely set in the middle where it should be, its off to the side where you can barely see it. She acts like she can see from it (but not too well). Could this be Mareks? She doesnt act funny or different, other than she is VERY clingy to me and VERY talkative. Thanks for the help guys!
