***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Emach, 99 to 1 it's an injury and the white you see is scar tissue. Chickens are relatively safe from Marek's after 5-6 months of age. There's just 1 form of Marek's that cuases the gray film on their eye.
Will anyone take a 4 mo old Lavender Ameraucana cockerel? It seems silly to spend the money getting him caponized when I'm not attached enough to keep him if someone wanted him. And I *am attached enough to my 2 Silver Laced Cochin boys and not sure I want to risk losing them so I'm on the fence about this.

Morning all. hot here, got all the chips separated and tested on horses and goats, the goats love them and the horses not so much the potato chips, will try the corn chips on the horses, am trying a mix of corn and cheese flavor potato chips with the chickens today, Egg supply is slowing down in this heat, we are watering every two hours and wetting pens down but it is suppose to be hotter here this week than what we have had. Everyone please be safe in this heat, stay hydrated and were a cap or hat when outside, I have a Ideal Hatchery special to share for those that raise free range broilers, it looks like a good deal to me!!! Have a great day, Lynn

Black Broiler Special

Black Broilers are efficient producers of broiler meat for those who do not wish to have white plumage broilers. When broiler rations are fed, producers can expect to have six pound broilers in seven weeks or less. Since black broilers are more active than Cornish Rocks and grow slightly slower, they rarely experience leg weakness or Ascite, which is fluid in the body cavity. Black Broiler hens are not a good choice for efficient production of brown eggs.

Got the kids two bunny rabbits this weekend and am now bout to get my hutch building on. They are in a chicken cage for the moment till i get this done. Love getting to go to auctions and meet others of you out and bout. there are many interesting people. Hope all is having a great monday. best to all.....

Emach, I'm having to post on my iPad because our wifi went out Saturday-they said it'd take like a week to get someone out here to fix it! Yikes! Anyway, it won't let me quote the posts and TapaTalk doesnt work with it for some reason.
But-5 wks is on the way low end of the spectrum for Marek's. Keep reading about it, it usually takes 4-12 wks for them to get sick from it. I suppose if she'd have been exposed when she was 1 wk old it might be possible, but unlikely. Especially given how common eye injuries are in chicks.
Mommapoppybee, ask Ellie if she'd take a 4 mo old Lavender Ameraucana cockerel. That'd be a good place for him since she lets them free range.
'Sides, I like her :)

Mitzi my tapatalk disnt work with BYC for a month then worked for a wk -- past 2 wks hasn't worked! It works with another forum I use-- never any issue. It is for sure a BYC compatability issue.
My chickens have already retreated to their coop for the day. They said forget free ranging. They want to lounge under the fan. I have maybe 3 or 4 that are laying under the flat bed trailer.
The meat birds are not an awful price, but seriously how do you put chickens in a brooder when it is 110 degrees??? How would they even survive shipping to our parts?

I could really use a ameraucana roo- send me a pm if interested.

Buster it's awesome that you are going to be able to grow your meat business. I am sure 1000 birds a yr won't put a dent in the local demand, so there is for sure room for others to do the same. Perhaps in the future a few others could work with you & maybe raise them at their own place & you process them? As the demand grows that would help work around the 1000 bird limit, because each grower could raise 1000 birds & you could still profit from doing the processing & they could process from the work of growing them.

I couldn't agree more. We could form a Lawton cooperative (you and your DH, me, Ronny, Boyd, etc) and help one another process our birds. I couldn't process your birds for you, because of how the regs read, but there is nothing that says you can't have help. In fact, it is encouraged that you have trained help. Don't know if you caught my earlier post about it, but we now have enough equipment to have two full processing setups, so we are looking for a trailer to build a mobile processing unit. Just haul it over to the place where the processing needs to take place and go to it.

We could supply the Lawton area with all the broilers it wants! :)

Oh I had such a good laugh this morning watching my "chicken soap opera". Y'all know my Silkie I bought at POOPS is very weird, for a Silkie. She's quite aggressive, lays every day, and she apparently thinks babies are for losers, because she's shown no interest at all in going broody. Well, last night one of my little thirteen week old cockerels decided that he was mature enough to start topping the hens, and he picked out my Silkie. He chased her down, caught her by her topknot and held her down. He climbed right up on her back and dug in. . . and then I guess he couldn't figure out why the heck he was up there in the first place. He looked SO SILLY! He was just sitting on her like a kid sits on a pony and he was looking around like he was saying "Did I do it? Is this all there is?" Meanwhile she was squawking and yelling and mad as all git out. Jamie, my alpha rooster finally walked over and pecked the teenager on the head and ran him off. Well, Ushas, my Silkie was after that bad boy in a New York minute. She grabbed him by his comb and flogged the heck out of him. When he got away she grabbed him by his wattles. This morning after I moved the coop and let them out, the first thing she did was grab him and start flogging him again. He's my biggest, strongest young rooster, and all day long he's been hiding out trying to keep out of her reach. Just thought I'd share. :) Edit spelling.
