***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Dinner tonight was shrimp, potstickers, and rice. Marinaded the shrimp in the syrup from the mild cowboy candy. It was WAY yummy, every time I empty a jar we will use it for pork or shrimp I believe.
DH unloaded most of the greenhouse this AM while us girls picked the garden. My fall corn is starting to come up & the greenbeans are doing well. The tomatoes I put in the ground are looking rough. I watered them heavy & fertilized them. This evening we still have to unload the monstrous heaters & fans for the greenhouse. Think they will be in the barn, hopefully the heater is propane & the chickens will have a cozy house this winter! The guy we bought it from never used the heater so wasn't sure. I am thinking a 100 gal propane bottle to run it would be perfect for the barn. If we can keep it above freezing in the winter it will make our work load MUCH easier!
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

mj I had to laugh hubby and I are always saying we cant wait till the teens turn 25 and we get smart again!

My flight for tomorrow was cancelled so it will be late tomorrow before I get home. Now have to fly to Miami, then to Dallas and then to OKC, grrrr. I am sitting by the pool for now but soon will be enjoying dinner then going to my roim and probably tick off my coworker lol. I plan on watching tv until at least 10 so I can sleep on the plane tomorrow haha.

I know it is hotter than the sun surface there but darn it I miss it!

Hiya All, Hope everyone had a good weekend I was productive around here yesterday and today I helped out my neighbor and we ran out of gas 2 miles from the closest station I walked a mile and a half in this heat down country dirt roads before someone gave me a ride sure was appreciative of them by that point and it really wasn't so much the heat as the horse and deer flies were swooping in and taking out chunks, I hate those things worse than ticks they are nothing but airborne appetite just wings with teeth, you're bleeding before you even know they are there, So after my hike I took it easy for the day till it cooled off some now that everything is fed and watered I can retire for the night and get psyched up for work in the morning :)

Feeling better after a day in the a/c. I did help put the birds to bed tonight though a few minutes ago. Our neighbors were "watching" us through their window, peeking out the blinds so I turned off our lights. It's getting creepy. I think tomorrow the girls will get to range early in the morning while we water the garden and then they will go in the a/c house for the heat of the day. It's supposed to be 111 tomorrow. I'm not happy. Funny though, part of my garden seems to be loving this heat. My sorghum is putting up double heads on the stems and my Chinese long beans are producing like crazy. Everything else looks like it's melting. Although my fall corn is about a foot high now and seems to be fine and my zucchini is huge. Go figure. Hope this heat ends soon. Stay cool everyone.

One of my black australorps started laying this week. That was fun. The other one and my little EE should start laying soon too. They seem to be dealing with the heat "okay". Not great but they are hanging in there.

My little garden looks pretty pitiful. The tomatoes are still producing but they have slowed a lot. I'm considering turning everything under and planting for a fall crop. What is everyone planting for fall?? I haven't had a decent garden in years and my daughter has had a blast watching everything grow. I'd like to keep that going as long as I can.

Thanks and try to stay cool. The forecast looks pretty grim.

We're planting corn, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, kale, carrots, parsnips, rutabagas, and lettuce plus we still have winter squash growing. If it cools off a little and I can kill the grasshoppers down I'll plant some more beans too but the grasshoppers are eating the blooms as fast as the plants put them on. The kale grows most of the winter and carrots, rutabagas, and parsnips are better after they've had a frost. Even the cabbage will take some cold. Oh, and brussell sprouts which aren't picked usually until between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Look at Baker Creek Seed. They have lots of stuff on sale now. (read reviews first, if you go online) We also like Territorial seed which has some specific fall garden things.

For fall we are growing corn, beans, peas, tomatoes, kholorabi, raddish, beats, garlic, turnips, carrots, greens, may start some onions feom seed, maybe some more cucmbers & squash if we can keep the squash bugs away. I disnt bother with pumpkins or winter squash. The squash bugs are just too bad here. I am sure I am missing some. Doubt I will do broccoli, cauliflower or cabbages--- never seems to do well for me. I will try planting them inside the greenhouse next season so I can better keep the pest off. It isn't any fun to spend months growing something for the animals to eat it first!

You can plant a veggie garden for the fall? How does one go about this? Are there specific plants that do better in the winter, do the plants go all winter? My summer garden is dwindling in the heat, I've still got some watermelons and serrano peppers growing but my tomatoes and all my other peppers are pretty much done.

Up again when everyone else is sleeping. It was 114 here today. Digital thermometer is on the north side of the house in the shade. Ready for a break from the heat.

for weeks. I don't know if they are acclimated enough to endure 111 degrees. Tuesday and Wednesday will be worse: 113 is going to make earlier high temperatures look pleasant.

Have a great day, everyone. Stay in the shade : )
Ive been letting everyhen out to free range at 6:30 am and by 10 they are all back inside the pens and shadey spots. I wet everything down while the free range and fill the water and feeders. Then I go back out at 12, 2, 4 and 6 to wet down the tarps and areas and cool off the waterers..takes about 20 minutes, but I am drenched by the time I go back inside. .
I've signed up for a crochet swap here on byc and have been putzing designing squares for the swap thought I'd share here what I came up w/

Those look neat Kass Nice work. The gals will appreciate your efforts.

Quote: I didn't know kudzu grew in Oklahoma. Will have to look that up.

There is an ivy like vine that grows around here that has thorns as bad as a Blackberry. When we were cutting cedar over by Mulhall I made my base cuts in a huge cedar in the bottom of a canyon that was covered with this Ivy. The tree started creaking so I laid down my saw and went to make my exit. As the tree leaned it tightened the vine on the back side, where I had to make my exit, and I ended up having to go through that stuff. Took Teva the better part of an hour to pick the stray thorns out of me and I looked like I had gotten into a fight with a weedeater!
Are you talking about brambles. Those are some killer thorns. DNA collectors for sure!

Quote: You want to plant cool season crops or those that will ripen in 90 days....mid October. You have August and September thru mid Oct for warm season crops and after Oct 15 for those that tolerate the chill....that sounds refreshing....doesn't it?
It's been too hot to work in the garden so mine looks a mite weedy. The pumpkin and winter squash are running like crazy. Sweet potatoes too. Plan on spending some time getting a few beds ready for turnips and beets. Hubby doesn't eat green beans so I won't plant them. grasshoppers ate the lima beans and purple hulls when they were coming up. Will treat the garden and then plant again.
