***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Morning all, I have received an abundant supply of out of date potato, corn, assorted chips!!! Any ideas as to how to be able to utilize them in my feeding system??? I know that pigs can't have salt so they will get very few of them, anyone know if they will hurt the chickens or if they will eat them?? The goats like them and the horses ate a few of the potato chips yesterday but it will take years to feed the pickup load I got to the three goats I have!!!! Anyone close to Stillwater want some?? Some of them are just out or close to out of date so we will be putting some in the freezer for use too!!! I see taco casseroles in the future!!!! Stay safe today! Have a great day, Lynn

Well I drug the oldest out of bed(funny how he can get up at 5am when he wants to go lift weights but not when I have things to do!!!) Got him working on goat housing and water buckets, I made sausage, gravy, canned biscuits and buttered toast!!! Coffee is made, I have to vent, I am sorry folks but I am so tired of kids attitudes today!! They act like we owe them everything they want and they should not be asked or told to do anything they don't want to, if you bust their b--ts then everyone complains but nobody want to take them and deal with them, they just want to tell you how to do everything, they do listen, don't acknowledge you when you speak to them, they glare at you, talk back, mumble, half way do everything you send them to do!!!! DON'T GET ME WRONG!!! I DO LOVE MY KIDS!!!! Just not sure where I went wrong in raising them! And to top it of, when they go with or do stuff for other people they work hard, they are polite, they laugh and have fun!!!! Then people don't understand where I get upset with them, sometimes I think it is a secret plan to drive me crazy!!! Thank you all for letting me vent, if it offends some of you I apologize!!! Have a great day, stay out of the heat and take care, Lynn

I was told once by a teacher they call it school bus parenting... It doesnt matter how you raise your kids they will pick up the attitude of the kids around them. I know I raised my kids right. My older ones(over the age of 18) are getting it together, but My two teens still in the house I would love to strangle most days. They are polite and helpful around others but at home they have a mouth that I would have got the fire beat out of me for... And then the ultimate, you cant touch me...... Just makes me mad!!!! I love my kids to death, but hate the teenagers that they are right now.

Poco, those temps are miserable!!! Robin, it's actually *hotter here than it is in Arizona-I looked it up.
Thank God for this RV we have. I've got chicks brooding all over in here but the AC is nice and cold. I had been putting the 5-6 wk olds outside in the day time and letting them sleep inside at night in the warmest room (so they didnt get used to cold AC at night) but I don't think I can bear to put them outside in this horrible oven this week.
This has been an awful few wks.
Hey MJ-I got an egg from one of the Ameraucanas I got from Jack! She's been squatting for a week or 2 so I'm pretty sure she's the one. It's a little dark blue-green pullet egg but I set it with the others I set yesterday just in case. The 2 boys in that yard are getting caponized this week so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I tried so very hard not to drag the 24 egg incubator BACK out again yesterday. But I've been really wanting to see what kind of babies the Faverolles boy and his Orloff girl would make so I set 2 of those. Then the Splash Silkie and Crele OEGB are together and *she laid her 1st egg y-day so I set it in case it hatched because it would be adorable. Then I set 2 from my big Blue Cochin boy and the Blue Ameraucana. And for good luck I set 2 from the Araucanas I got from Joe. Knowing I can get the males caponized for 1/2 what most people pay to go to dinner and a movie? That was the deciding factor in setting them.

Congrats on your anniversary. Glad they were able to get you going again. I realized a long time ago that fresh air and the great outdoors were hazardous to my health.

Still no idea what happened to our poultry judge. I think he's a younger guy who maybe just forgot and another parent thinks he's a really elderly fellow that might have suffered a heat related mishap.

I'm right. We managed to harass a poor guy who did market/production type judging awhile back into doing it, so thankfully we were able to continue the show. Was a big letdown though and had definite repercussions in the outcomes. DD's Silkies got red because he thought the shredding was feather damage. We'd also been really looking forward to having a real judge. The fellow that was nice enough to fill in has expressed an interest in getting licensed as a poultry judge, so maybe there will ultimately be a great outcome.

Those temps look miserable. My lawn is dead and trees all over are turning brown. The birds so far have weathered it well except for the meaties. We lost 7 last week. Processing is set for Wed. and can't possibly get here soon enough.

Not that I know this will work but I thought maybe you could rinse them so they aren't so salty. They'd probably be a little mushy but all the animals could eat them then. Freezing is a great way to keep them longer. You can even crush them before freezing if you plan on using them for casseroles or as toppings, then they'll take up less space. Dunno otherwise ...

A possum is more likely to eat the feed out of the feeders and drink down the water, same with a skunk. I have seen skunks asleep nearly next to broodys and through the years have heard more then one tale of skunks asleep in nest boxes.

If they were out during the day my best guess would be a bird of prey or a crow if they were small enough.

Robin I bet that was quite the sight.

Today when I delivered a couple of feeder rats to a customer the second one got loose in his house. We had a good rat rodeo for about 30 minutes!

We had a possum eat two of our turkeys, actually just beheaded them through the fence. It was sad. We've had a skunk in the yard too but it didn't seem to bother anything. It eats the cat food and drinks from the turtle pond and wanders away.

Try chasing a bat around the house ... and a squirrel. Those were fun days!!

Actually dealing with heat exhaustion today. We went and got water yesterday at the well and moved it into the garage and it was so hot but I wasn't sweating at all and started to chill. My husband put me to bed in our very cool room but I was still up with a headache and chills and nausea most of the night. I finally ate something for lunch today. I'm sitting here watching the swimming on the Olympics and thinking how wonderful it would be to be floating along with them.

I've signed up for a crochet swap here on byc and have been putzing designing squares for the swap thought I'd share here what I came up w/
