***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I took a couple of pics of my Lavender Orps. They are about 6 months old now. Still waiting for their first egg. Gonna have to get rid of some of the roos because I have 2, maybe 3 hens and 5-6 roos. The roosters pull each others tails out I guess trying to make the others look bad. LOL

Went out to try an catch a snake he has ben killing my bird's an cant swallow thim ..he do's get off with the small one's tho but he has left 2 dead in the last week..NanaKat if you come to the auction bring some of your stuff you have cand we would all love to bid on it..One time i took some stuff Greybear had cand in on trade for some bird's thin put it in the auction an it brot more than wat i was asking for the birds BYCer's love stuff like that...
Thank you for the suggestion Michael.

Jack and Elie Mae went to Harrah auction last night and it was MUCH cooler inside. Pat (auction owner) had a big swamp cooler and an air conditioner inside and had sprinklers running over the outside of the building and it was in the low 90's inside. I never thought that the 90's would sound cool. DH and I were thinking about when we lived in San Diego and 72* sounds so cold now. I would need a sweater.

If it turned 72 degrees today...I'd be asking for a sweater too.

Pretty birds.

I have lost another pre teen to a day time preditor.

I was out spraying water at about 6:30 pm and she was there, then Gary went and locked up at about 8:30 and she was gone. We set out the live trap again, I'm assuming it is a cat since it was a day time loss and only one young chick.

In 2001, we got our first leghorns from Fisher's in Bristow. We were there to buy feed for our cows and saw a note posted on their bulletin board. The chickens were laying machines, but were so flighty that I haven't wanted white leghorns since.

If you can, get some egg layer feed from Fisher's Mill while you are there. It is the shop on the same side as the road and their chicken feed is cracked grains, rather than the pellets you get from Fisher's Farm across the driveway. We generally buy a few tons at a time, since fuel is so expensive to go to Bristow from OKC.

Will do, Maribeth. Thanks. Few tons? What do you use to haul "a few tons"? I'm truck-ignorant, so when I see something rated half ton or 3/4 ton, I figure that is all it can effectively haul. Am I off on that? I sure would like to pick up a ton at a time with my half ton van.

I'm not a big fan of leghorns, either, but they are prodigious layers and we are desperate to get our production levels up. If leghorns can't do it, nothing can.

It would be great if Okies in the line of fires could check in occasionally so we know you are safe and well. This stuff is scary.

Quote: Thank you. I know I have 2 hens, 5 roosters and 1? Darn the luck. Wish I had more hens. I have one that seems like a hen but looks like a roo and it is the only one I haven't seen crow yet. I am still guessing it is a roo though. The one on the far right has a broken part in his wing. He had that when I got him. He was smaller than most of the others and they beat him up when they were in the brooder. Now they leave him alone. I had to separate him for a long time. I had him with one of the hens that was smaller like him. They are the most friendly cause they stayed inside in the box for a long time. Otherwise, he is a very pretty bird but you can see the bottom part of his wing hangs out a little.

I have a couple of hens who are losing feathers on their head. One of those already has tons of pin feathers growing back in. They are both 1 year old and have never molted before. Is this molting season? I thought they were suppose to molt in the fall. Or, should I be checking for a problem?

I just heard a weird noise and went out to investigate.
idunno.gif
My guineas were all looking in one direction with their heads stretched out. More were joining them making their warning noise. Then I saw it.

A raccoon was headed toward one of my N.N.hens.

I g
ot my rifle and headed toward it, but it didn’t see me because of the noisy guineas trailing it. They began to encircle it by the time I got close. They were in attack mode, and began taking turns charging at it. The coon started running from them, right toward me. That gave me a good shot at the coon.

Now this is broad daylight, 10:00 in the morning, sun shining and 90 degrees. Could she have been rabid? I picked her up by the tail to remove her just in case. .

It is always a possibility the coon could be rabid but this heat is driving animals to take bigger risk than usual. They are hot, thirsty and hungry I guess. It is good you got it before it got your NN.

Kass, so sorry you lost one today. I hope you catch the critter that did it.
