Jack and Elie Mae went to Harrah auction last night and it was MUCH cooler inside. Pat (auction owner) had a big swamp cooler and an air conditioner inside and had sprinklers running over the outside of the building and it was in the low 90's inside. I never thought that the 90's would sound cool. DH and I were thinking about when we lived in San Diego and 72* sounds so cold now. I would need a sweater.
Pretty birds.
In 2001, we got our first leghorns from Fisher's in Bristow. We were there to buy feed for our cows and saw a note posted on their bulletin board. The chickens were laying machines, but were so flighty that I haven't wanted white leghorns since.
If you can, get some egg layer feed from Fisher's Mill while you are there. It is the shop on the same side as the road and their chicken feed is cracked grains, rather than the pellets you get from Fisher's Farm across the driveway. We generally buy a few tons at a time, since fuel is so expensive to go to Bristow from OKC.
Quote: Thank you. I know I have 2 hens, 5 roosters and 1? Darn the luck. Wish I had more hens. I have one that seems like a hen but looks like a roo and it is the only one I haven't seen crow yet. I am still guessing it is a roo though. The one on the far right has a broken part in his wing. He had that when I got him. He was smaller than most of the others and they beat him up when they were in the brooder. Now they leave him alone. I had to separate him for a long time. I had him with one of the hens that was smaller like him. They are the most friendly cause they stayed inside in the box for a long time. Otherwise, he is a very pretty bird but you can see the bottom part of his wing hangs out a little.
It is always a possibility the coon could be rabid but this heat is driving animals to take bigger risk than usual. They are hot, thirsty and hungry I guess. It is good you got it before it got your NN.
I just heard a weird noise and went out to investigate. My guineas were all looking in one direction with their heads stretched out. More were joining them making their warning noise. Then I saw it.
A raccoon was headed toward one of my N.N.hens.
I got my rifle and headed toward it, but it didn’t see me because of the noisy guineas trailing it. They began to encircle it by the time I got close. They were in attack mode, and began taking turns charging at it. The coon started running from them, right toward me. That gave me a good shot at the coon.![]()

Now this is broad daylight, 10:00 in the morning, sun shining and 90 degrees. Could she have been rabid? I picked her up by the tail to remove her just in case. .
