***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Got the perfect trailer for my MPU. Short, wide, and lightweight with a grill floor. Plenty of room to fit the processing table on one side, plucker and scalder on the other, and kill station across the front. Also, ran into my neighbor who offered to sell his 16' landscaping trailer for less than they were going for at the auction, plus in better condition. So, all day I had in mind a top price I was willing to go.
And I picked up a great cage!
Overall, a great day at the auction.
Awesome

Humph! Where is all this rain they were telling about coming all week long? we haven't gotten a drop here so far, I guess that's what I get for believing the weather guessers as Elbert calls them LOL, I hope everyone is having a great weekend, I'm staying busy mostly, As usual I have way too much going on and not near enough time to get much of it done but I was looking forward to having the excuse of getting rained out to justify an extended break :) ah well, maybe that will happen tomorrow, Later all

I'm right there with you on the Humph!! We've gotten a few drops today and about 1/4 inch all week ... so much for 2 - 3 inches. It never fails. When the weather man tells us we only have a 20 - 30% chance of rain we get bucket loads and when they say we have a 100% chance we get nothing. We keep watching the radar tonight but it keeps going around us.

It rained near 1/2 inch this morning. Got my aunt and cousin seen off today, they should be back in CT this evening, she needs to set up her classroom and be ready to start teaching Mon. I am tired it has been a looooong week.
Glad you got some rain and everyone seen off today. Get some rest. Hopefully next week will be slower for you.

We got all but one garden bed done today plus all the brassicas planted and more carrots in the ground. We also started rebuilding our fire pit and put in the base for my outdoor clay bread/pizza oven. We even went and priced the sheet metal for it. The turkeys were fighting yesterday but they haven't done it again so I guess they were just testing the waters. I don't like watching the birds battle for dominance even though I know they would do it in the wild.

Ate our first rabbit tonight. I fried it because I thought that would be the most familiar food form we were used to. It was great. Tasted just like chicken only it was finer grained and all of it is white meat. We're going to try a stew with the next one I think. I'm glad we all liked it so that we aren't wasting our time raising bunnies for food. Now if we could just figure out how to tan the furs properly.

Oh well, I'll just keep praying for the rain to show up tonight. Have a good weekend everyone!

Congrats!

I have a broody hen! My little silkie went broody today. If she sits tight tomorrow, I'll give her some Dominique eggs. She's so mean normally I'm worried that she's going to take chunks out of me.

Well, I found a bunch of mite/lice eggs at the base of the silkies feathers when I gave him a bath today. I dusted thecrap out of all of the birds with sevin dust. Not a good day.

How hard is it to get rid of these, and how long does it take? Are they the same kind of lice that people get? Should I get stuff for the kids hair and the house just in case? I'm kinda freaking out here. Anyone ever have this problem before? All advise is welcome. Thanks in advance!

No, these are not the same kind of mites/lice. Adams flea and tick dip works. Wet the bird in water....I float one in a five gallon bucket of water for a few minutes and swish feathers to remove many of the mites. Then using a gallon or two depending on the size of bird, float a few minutes in the dip. I use a sponge to get the head, but don't get it in the nostril, eyes or mouth.

I spray the hen house down with Ivermectin barn spray. I empty the hen house first, and take oll hay out of nest boxes. Then I liberally spray down all surfaces, cracks and crevices. When it is dry, I put the birds back in.

A dusting box filled with a mixture of fine dirt, sand, wood ash, sevin dust or carbryl dust gives the birds a chance to treat themselves.

I hear thunder and there are a few sprinkles of rain!
The kfor radar looks like most of the rain is going to miss me by a few miles, but even a little will help.
Typical Oklahoma weather - we all need rain but some will also receive strong winds that none of us need.

Nana, what a TON of work on your ponds!
It's raining buckets here. I had to trek clear out to the Brahmas yard to load their soggy butts into their coop. The Faverolles cockerel who lives with them was already in it though. It's 4x8 and 6' tall, not a scary short coop they have to duck into, it's got rope lights and a fan, their food and water. I just don't know why they won't go in it at night or bad weather.I finally gave up going out at dark every night and ushering them into it. They go in and out of it just fine to eat during the day. They're making me crazy :/

No thunder of lightning here but it is raining a slow steady rain that's really great and just what we need now if it will just last for a few days
