***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have a broodie CW hen that would sit on rocks. She became broodie two days ago and growls every time I take her off the nest. I have eggs in an incubator and eggs hatching in a warmer box. May have to see if she will take these babies for me....there are 7 out of the shell, but two may not make it. They were the last to hatch and are really slow going...one still has a yolk bottom.

We have loads of thunder and lightening but very little rain although it is a steady sprinkle for an hour .....

The dogs woke me up so I'm in the den with them....don't want them waking hubby.

I will be curious to hear if she will take them. I did that one time with a broody who had been on the nest for about a week. She took the chicks, but the hormonal change from broody to mama in less than 21 days caused her to have massive diarrhea for a few days.

Reagor, another remedy for lice, mites, and some internal worms is Ivermectin pour-on. It is a cattle wormer, but commonly used for poultry as well. I know several big silkie breeders who use it--some monthly. I only use it when I see mites and when I'm taking birds to sell. the usual practice is to place 3 drops up against the skin on the back of their necks. I find it to be quite effective. Mites and lice are species selective, and although they might get on humans and even bite a bit, they die fairly quickly with no treatment at all.

Adams flea and tick shampoo for dogs is also effective. When I'm preparing birds for shows, I first lather them with the shampoo, then wrap them completely in an old bath towel for five minutes. Then I rinse that out, shampoo with another shampoo, rinse completely, then blow them dry. I then apply the 3 drops of Ivermectin as well. Much to my surprise, I haven't found any lice or mites for the better part of a year. (Only had one bird with a few lice once.) I've expected to find mites in their crests, as silkies are a magnet for mites, but haven't had any during that time. I continue to treat them before selling and shows.

We finally got a nice, hard rain last night, and it rained slowly nearly all night. Don't know how much we got, but it must have been a fairly substantial amount. Badly, badly needed. Hoping it continues to rain another day or two.

Thank goodness for some rain, according to Mesonet we got about 1.5 inches but that was measured in Inola, I think here between Tulsa and Catoosa we got more than that. If anyone is interested it is an AWESOME resource for weather stats, etc all around the state I use it for my last frost date in the spring, soil temps etc. Even has pressure, groundwater, humidity, and regular weather charts. It has a WEALTH of historic weather and farming related data going back decades. Love it. http://www.mesonet.org/index.php

We won't be making it to church this morning. To much mud to get the kids out in. Last time we tried getting out in this kind of mud Shanda refused to walk and hubby fell trying to carry her to the van. So we decided to not put everyone through another Sunday morning like that. We will just enjoy a quiet morning at home. Someone will have to get out and pick up Matthew since he was meeting us at church this morning after being on a basketball trip this weekend. But we don't have to get Shanda or the little boys out. So happy we got the rain though. I will be out getting pens dried out a bit with fresh pine shavings so they aren't in the mud. I need to walk out to the rain gauge and see how much wet we really got. I know the pond must look a 100% better. Nana wish we had a pond or two as big as yours.

Mitzi, I have two pens of birds that refuse to go in their coops at night. Instead they lay in their yard in a pile by the door to the yard. Drives me insane, most nights we go force them in for the night but I didn't last night. So I am sure I have soaking wet birds out there right now. Like you I don't understand them. They have a big hoop house with lots of roosts and food and water, and they go in and out all day but at night they want to sleep under the stars, lol.

Guess I better get my lazy self out there to feed and water and get started on cleaning up the pens. Hubby finished the top on one of the new pens just have to finish their shelter before moving birds in. Maybe we can get that done today.
