It's not a venomous snake for sure I'd need to see the underside to be certain but looks like a Ring-neck snake the tail is a bit long kinda like a Coach-whip but 5 inches seems too small to me to be a hatchling, A Ring-neck would have an orange'ish to yellow belly with black dots on each of the scales esp. near the vent. A lot of snakes take the same defensive posture and doing so makes the head appear to take on the triangular shape some more than others like the Hog nosed snake is really good at that and as a defensive illusion works to fool would be attackers, Unless the attacker has a giant shovel but it still can't hurt to try even if you're only 5 inches long LOL

We have ringnecks on the farm that get to be about 8 inches. This hatchiling isn't a ring neck...no orangey coral color about the neck or underside. It was the same color underneath as on the back...muddy brown. There was no visible stripe or pattern on the body...that's what made us think it was a baby.

Ah, I see. I micromanage mine probably too much. I was sick a couple years ago and they did everything themselves to get ready for their show without me, but normally it's a family affair. Youngest does catch and transport between stations. I do testing, banding, beaks and toes. (I'm not comfortable with the younger two on beaks yet.) Older two do washing. Then my DH comes home and

at the mess. Then I think he hides out.

My POOPs plant didn't survive me. I was really careful transplanting, but I think maybe it was too much along with the heat. Most everything didn't make it here. My DH even mowed down and tilled a bunch of the garden. It was sad.

Anyone know anything about Oklahoma traffic laws or information sites? I ventured down today and got a huge ticket. What I did was legal here, but I can't find anything concrete for OK other than almost word for word the KS statutes, but dated in the 60's or so. Need to get to researching now to get ready for trial I guess. Not exactly sure how it all works as I've only ever had one ticket and it's been more than 20yrs since. Any advice is appreciated.

Are traffic ordinance books kept by county clerks or ????? Killing me to have to wait until Tues to find anything out.
Check with your local police department or highway patrol. They can help you get copies of the Oklahoma traffic laws.

Really? I didn't know that they could get info about other states. I had already planned to ask them Tues. if there was anything off about what I knew for here, because I would be in extreme danger of getting one here if there was something I was missing or didn't know about. It's legal to pass on the right here when you're passing someone turning left on the highway. What I've found so far for OK says the same thing, so I'm

. There's got to be either something new or at the local level I guess. Hopefully local only and I'll just go to OK another way.

They sure make it easy to just pay. Lots harder to figure out how to contest.

Driving on the shoulder is acceptable in TX, but not a common practice here in Oklahoma. I am not saying it is against the law..... But TX is the only place I have ever seen it as a common practice. Good luck getting a straight answer. When I was in college I needed some info on local car seat laws & no one could help me!! Tried lots of sources no solid documentation!

Lol, I've only been to TX maybe 2 times and from what I saw, they don't care if there is a shoulder or not.

Lot's of places I've found so far say no to actual off-roading. I never left the concrete. I slowed to about 15-20mph and stayed on the concrete. Really had no idea why he was pulling me over. The fine is crazy high (like a couple weeks worth of groceries) and my DH says our insurance will go sky high from it. We own a '93 and a '99. There's reasons for that.

I'll be taking pictures and video with me. Not sure what else I need to take or do. I'm a terrible public speaker. I giggle and hyperventilate.

Here's the KS stuff, pretty much word for word on the older OK stuff I found and other states info...

Sec. 41. When Passing on the Right is Permitted.

(a) The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:

(1) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn; or

(2) Upon a roadway with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of vehicles moving lawfully in the direction being traveled by the overtaking vehicle.

(b) The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass another vehicle upon the right only under conditions permitting such movement in safety. Such movement shall not be made by driving off the roadway. (K.S.A. 8-1517)

I would say I overtake on the right pretty much on a daily basis getting the kids to and from school. Often multiple times in a day. There are two intersections that could easily back traffic up for miles if we all didn't.

On a side not, I got to go to Andolini's in Owasso. I'd never been before. Their signature salad was quite good, especially with garlic knots. Bit of sweet and salty thing going on.

Here is a picture I took at the kids house of a hatchling snake. It was only 5 inche long but you can see the triangular head and it went into strike position really quickly. Don't know wht kind it is.Their home is in a new housing area in Edmond that was all woods....so they do have copperheads and scorpions, etc.

We have ringnecks on the farm that get to be about 8 inches. This hatchiling isn't a ring neck...no orangey coral color about the neck or underside. Red bellied racers are only found in the Caribbean although they and Ringnecks are species of Colubrid snakes, still could be any number of non-poisonous snakes, The things to look for along with color is banding, spots or stripes, If it has smooth, lightly keeled or sharply keeled scales and if the anal plate is single or divided sometimes even counting the dorsal scales on each side, etc.etc. Some snakes that look really similar when they are young will look very different when older and some the just the reverse making identifying very young snakes tough sometimes, Being 5 inches long night not mean it's a hatchling though we have several species that are small breed snakes the Texas Brown snake, Common Ground or the Smooth Earth snake among others only get to around 12 inches at the most, and hatchlings can be smaller than 5 inches that is if they are a snake hatched and not born as some of our snakes in Oklahoma have live babies LOL I've always enjoyed identifying snakes when I was 9 I wanted to be a herpetologist and discover new species of snakes no one had ever seen before LOL That was the same year I invented Elwood Lightfoot which is another story in itself LOL

Whether or not it's legal or in the law I know that passing on the right will always get you a ticket if you get caught even if the shoulder is paved, the only way you can pass on the right is if the car you pass is turning left in a turn lane and you have a proper lane to go around in, or on the highway if your in your own lane, However if the car ahead of you is going under the speed limit and is in the inside lane and traffic catches up to it it's supposed to be a ticked for not moving over to allow you to pass, A few months ago I read where OHP was going to crack down on this particular violation and I for one wanted to see them do it cause for whatever reason when Texans drive in Oklahoma they go 5 to 10 mph under the speed limit in the fast lane as if they think they are the appointed keepers of the speed limit, Sorry I had a moment there LOL

I wish you luck fighting the ticket I've had my share of them and have learned that no matter if you have witness', in Oklahoma you will be guilty, I used to go to court and fight them when I knew I hadn't been speeding or I knew I came to a full stop then I gave up trying to win and still show up to court to plead guilty and plead for the court to suspend the ticket, you will still have to pay the fines but it won't effect your insurance, just don't get another ticket in that courts area for as long as they suspend it for LOL

WOW Nana that snake is tiny, looks like one hubby and the boys killed on our back patio last year. I never knew about the UV light and scorpions. We found our first one in the house this last week. I was sitting at the desk and it scurried out from under it. Our issue is mice, we can't seem to keep them out of the house this summer. We have tried everything and no resorting to sticky traps from the feed store. Not the most humane way to get rid of them but we have tried all the other traps and I can't put out poison due to the kids, birds, cats, dogs, well the zoo we call family, lol.

I did absolutely nothing today, we did go to church but that was it. We even stopped and got pizza for lunch so I just came home and took a nap. The boys took care of birds for me today. Tomorrow no such luck I have to get temp yards taken down off two pens and moved. Then move some birds around. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit cooler.
We have had 4 mice in the house this Summer. We have only seen one in the past 8 years. Poor mice, they would do better to stay outside. We have two very large, Maine Coon-type cats and a little, but very ruthless, Siamese/Calico girl.
