***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My husband is officially the hero of the annual male Tamplen fishing/hunting/camping trip. They go every year in Oct, and this year it fell on a game they all wanted to watch, so they all brought radios so they could listen to the game, except Gary..................................................... he brought the tv from the study, cables of all kinds, antennea and generator specifically so they could watch the game. So this group of guys are going to be in the woods in Eufaula all huddled around a TV tonight so they can see the game.

the first winter we had guineas was a riot- they wanted to sit on the car, but the darn thing was just slick

Good Morning! It`s a frosty 29°F......Brrrr! I hope everybody is enjoying their weekend, mine has been uneventful so far and that`s how I like `em. I hope y`all have a great day!

Morning, Chicken Friends : )
Charley, if you're lurking out there, take a look at this bad boy : ) I let groups out to free-range yesterday, and they spent most of their break hunting for bugs. My Standard Cornish alpha roo, Kiev, found some pill bugs under a bush near the house. He fed his girls most of the afternoon. It was great to watch him dig and then call to the ladies.

My little ones, a group of cream Legbars, who are about two months old, are doing well in the cold. I'm going to watch them closely to be sure they can handle the temperatures as they drop.

Good Morning Okies! It is brisk out there this morning! I'll go back out when temps rise a little to let the flocks out to range. I covered my fall potatoes and will uncover them when the frost melts...hope to see that the vines aren't,t damaged. We have some nice weather coming again.
Mitzi... I have the two 12x12 rooms in the barn, One for brooders and banties and the other is the layer /cochin coop. Each has a 10 hole nester hanging on the wall and each has a floor pen for either chicks or a broody with chicks until they are 3 weeks old to go range. then the floor pens are used for growing chicks transitioning from the concrete floor to the dirt floor and then to the outside. There is a 6 x 50 foot run attached to the south side of the barn that has an opening that is never closed so the hens can go out anytime. Samson the Cochin roo has a harem of 35 lucky girls. he has his favorites but all the girls answer to his food calls. I will separate him and the Cochin girls for pure bred breeding in a few weeks.
A 14 x 16 foot covered yard with a coop currently hold the Columbian Wyandottes and the F1 CW/Aussies for breeding back to Beau. that pen has a 6x8 pen that can be closed. I have been attaching plywood to the inside walls and will water proof the roof to make it a bigger coop.
Next is a 25 x 40 uncovered pen that has a covered 8 x 16 dog kennel that houses the coop. (A pen within a pen). the roosters are housed there until I butcher and until those I will use for breeding are old enough. There is plenty of grass forth these guys but I let them out to range with the flock.
Pen four is 25 x 30 for the two geese. They have a goose house loaded with hay for sleeping but they haven't chosen to use it preferring to sleep on the ground. They have a kiddie pool. they range also.
All birds have access to as much ground as they want when out free ranging. They have been in the front yard, around the far side of the barn, in the garden, out under the trailers and tractors, and out in the pasture with the cows...they like checking out the creep feeder for the calves too. We range the flocks from sunup to sundown and Beau and Samson actually keep their flocks separate from each other. Each flock returns to their own coop each evening...chickens are really smarter than we give them credit.
What a wonderful set-up! You're way more organized about the whole thing than I am. I wish I could free range but we've only got 2 1/2 acres and none of the neighbors fence their dogs. We have fences but I just know the dogs would dig under and get to the chickens if they were off at the far end of the place somewhere.

Good morning all! Just dropping in to let everyone know I am alive, I did actually get out yesterday morning and supervise and help a little with doing some much needed burning around here, we have a semi load of feed sacks to burn along with a bunch of junk wood and busted pallets, cleaning up the yard and taking advantage of the windless next few days!!! Chickens are all doing well, traded for a couple young Brown Red Game roosters on Friday and will be setting up some pens with them for spring hatching soon. Enjoyed the weather the last few days, bought me another old pickup and been tinkering with it with Dakota and a Mechanic friend. Hope everyone has a blessed day!!! Lynn

greybear, nice to "see" you.

ksane, camping, relaxing, cozy?????? Not for me I am not a camper at all.

I didn't know moderns came in LF I thought they were all small. Still I don't want a chicken skinnier and taller then me! lol

Good morning everyone! I've been making my final selection of keeper roosters. Through a weird turn of events, I ended up keeping four. I have four Dominique hens, and five pullets, and three chicks that I suspect are all girls, so that will be 12 girls total next spring. I am keeping two cockerels with them. However, my cock bird has started hanging out with the guineas and has really whipped them into shape. The alpha guinea hen has taken up with him and they are staying closer to home, not fighting all the time and not chasing my chickens. So, I'll keep an alpha and a beta rooster in the guinea house. Oh, that's another thing. The guineas now go to roost IN THE BIG CHICKEN COOP, now that they've got the roosters with them. I picked out two pullets to take to the show in Shawnee. Still not sure about what boys to take, if any. Saw my ortho last week, and am scheduled for surgery on Nov. 8 to fix whatever the heck is wrong with my knee. It'll be good to have that over with.

Here's Jamie with his harem. *facepalm* What a weirdo.

This Royal Purple girl is his favorite. They sit and groom each other. It's kinda freakishly cute.

Here's my two young guys that are going to over-winter with the layers.

Here's the two pullets I'm prepping for the show in December. I like them so far.

Ushas regrew her feathers! She's pretty again! No more mangey looking scrawny chicken butt!

Chicken dinner.

This is Father Jake. He'll be helping Jamie keep the guineas in line.

Barn cats JSYK and JFTR. (Just So You Know and Just For the Record.) I am not responsible for JSYK's name. When JFTR showed up, I thought well, they look so much alike that I just had to do it. They're pronounced "Jessick and Jeffter."

Anyone know how Barnswallow is doing??? Is Jason still gone & she facing the super storm on her own??? Hope everything is ok with them.

All the chickens have adjusted to the cool weather & are playing very happily. Some how the snakes adjusted too, DD pulled out a 5+ ft bull snake from the nest box. I thought it was to cold for snakes!!! Stupid stupid snakes!!!

DH worked on the electric fence with the girls. I can't be out long in the cold, seem to have a really hard time warming up after. I was sitting out in a plastic lawn chair & my dogs were competing for my love & somehow I ended up tipped over backwards on the ground & the chair broke. The dogs didn't mind at all, they just wanted me to keep letting them.
Also milked the Nubian doe the first time. We took her 3/4 grown baby away overnight & got a quart of milk this AM. Kids & DH drank it all gone (I don't like milk unless it has chocolate syrup in it). The baby is penned back up for the night & we will milk momma again in the AM. Taron is thrilled to have a goat to milk.

Hey all! Just stopping by. We've all been sick with the crud and we lost birds to a predator this week. Still have no idea what but between running fevers and massive headaches and ... well other bad bodily functions ... we've had to rebuild enclosures and move birds around. We didn't even gather eggs for two days and found two of our turkeys have gone broody on the same nest. They had twelve turkey eggs and eighteen chicken eggs between them. Lol! We've paired them down a little but they are so funny. They are literally sharing a nest and sharing the eggs. When one gets up the other takes all the eggs and then when they are both there again they redivide the eggs. We've had cats share kittens before but I didn't know birds would do such a thing. Who woulda thunk it? Hope this crud clears up soon ...

That is really funny and neat.
