The tonic I make is simple, I use a quart jar...put about 1/4 cup of good unsulfured molasses in it, 1/2 tsp cayenne, and fill it with unpasteurized ACV. The right ingredients make all the difference. The molasses needs to be unsulfured (I use Tree of Life brand), the cayenne needs to be at least 40,000 heat units, and the ACV needs to be raw and unfiltered (I use Bragg brand). On newly ordered chicks, I put about 1/2 cup of this into a quart of water and offer as their only water source for about a week. I use a couple of tablespoons per quart of water after that. I've never had a case of pasty butt since I started using it....and we've got about 100 chicks/turkeys/ducklings in brooders right now.
The tonic works great for stressed or ill birds as well.
If you are concerned about giardia the bleach is the least expensive way to go...but I would use either grapefruit seed extract (just a couple of drops in a gallon of water) or ACV if possible. If you grow your own garlic, adding a clove of garlic to the water will help also. The ACV, grapefruit seed extract, and/or garlic will help the chickens' bodies fight infection.
