, we've built our brooder from one that we saw on here. We do not currently have chicks because I am not one to get the pet before the needed supplies. I am looking at Cochin bantams, plymouth rocks, orpingtons, sussex, but not sure if hatcheries are the way to go or breeders. If breeders are the way do any of you know of some here in oklahoma that are good? If hatcheries are the way do any know of good ones? Also, does anyone know of any good auctions that have chickens or chicken supplies that I might need? I am excited to start get my babies an happy to be here! Also, any and all ideas are very much appreciated, Thank You!

Welcome to fellow Blanchardite on the BYC. You are in luck on the auctions. There should be a auction this Saturday night at the Newcastle AG building on S. main Starts around 5pm, also there is one a the Blanchard AG barn the following week. Newcastle is usually the 1st and 2nd Sat. and Blanchard on the 3rd and 4th Sat. 5th Saturdays there is no auctions.

As for the bantam Cochins, there are several peeps on here that raise them. You can also check on craigslist.

from the okie side. Enjoy your stay.

This week I have been working on digging runner grass roots and small trees out of 200 feet (2 foot wide) of new beds and mulching w/ 6 inches or so deep of cedar wood chips, I have finished 150 feet of it. Hoping if the weather is decent I'll get it finished Friday.

Welcome to the BYC! There are two auctions for poultry actually quite close to you. One is in Blanchard and one is in Newcastle. Personally I prefer the newcastle and I think they are having an auction this Saturday.
As for hatchery vs breeder, I do think it all depends on what you want to do with your chickens. You will generally find a better quality of chicken from a breeder or even at the auction. If you don't plan to breed, show, etc your chickens and just want them for pets or eggs, then tractor supply, atwoods and hatcheries will be just fine. Just a note on hatcheries, they generally have a minimum order number of 25 or more. I would encourage you to reach out to us BYC'ers on which breeds, ages etc that you are looking for and I assure you we will help you fill your coops. We are great enablers!
If you choose to come to the newcastle auction many of us will be there, in the back near the table.

Good Luck and welcome to the craziness.

Mjgigimax has gorgeous mille fluer bantam cochin. Just an fyi.

Welcome to the new folks!

might check out the Heritage thread for ideas for breeds to begin your flocks...good info on using breeders instead of hatchery stock.

Only had 8 chicks hatch this week..none of the Bantams.
But the pens with 4 week olds (35) and almost 2 week olds (40) are increasing in size quickly and are increasing their input/output exponentially. Noticed some that are posturing like roosters even though they aren't really that old.
The broodie hens are doing great with their chicks. And all made it thru the snow/rain undrenched.
Will be picking up another batch of hatched babies this weekend. Then depending on whether we reach 50 out of some of the pens, will be changing to roosters in those pens.
No new calves today...guess the cows kept their legs crossed thru the snow...figure they will calve tonight.

We are wanting just a few chicks for right now, till we get the hang of things. My daughter wants to do show but I have no clue what so ever on how to go at that. I told her maybe once everything is running a lil more smoothly then we can look into it. Right now I also only want hens. I'm not keen yet on roos but I'm sure I'll warm up. Since we all want hens that we can just pick up whenever an pet, basically lap chickens, they need to be docile breeds. I do have one concern though, which breeds are docile an can stand this okie heat? We are wanting meat chickens down the road but for right now I want to get my babies figured out. We will probably go to both Blanchard an Newcastle to see what's available. Hope to see ppl, I'm super excited bout having a new breed of animal to add to my babies list.

Personally I find my rood easier to pick up and pet. But when you have as many as I do they aren't so much pets anymore. Also in my opinion the heavy egg layers aren't bred for personality and pets. Look forward to meeting you.
