a good way to get started showing for kids is through the 4H imo; i have heard silkies are really good for kids first chickens. We are wanting just a few chicks for right now, till we get the hang of things. My daughter wants to do show but I have no clue what so ever on how to go at that. I told her maybe once everything is running a lil more smoothly then we can look into it. Right now I also only want hens. I'm not keen yet on roos but I'm sure I'll warm up. Since we all want hens that we can just pick up whenever an pet, basically lap chickens, they need to be docile breeds. I do have one concern though, which breeds are docile an can stand this okie heat? We are wanting meat chickens down the road but for right now I want to get my babies figured out. We will probably go to both Blanchard an Newcastle to see what's available. Hope to see ppl, I'm super excited bout having a new breed of animal to add to my babies list.

Go to this thread:How do I go about getting Silkies? They are really cute looking! Also, what other docile kid friendly chickens are out there?![]()
I did have a couple of concerns: What shots do I get my chickens? How do I make sure my babies don't get lice/mites? If they were to get them, how do I get rid of them? I am seriously lost as to how to take care of the babies when they are in the brooder.
I think I've read so much info on care from so any different websites that I confused myself.![]()
I do that alot btw. I bought a 99ltr plastic storage box for the brooder, but lost basically on what to do from there. If any have ideas or websites for me to go to, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you everyone! So happy I joined up,

I will be there at Newcastle this week and can tell you about Cochins. I am crazy about them. I'll wear a red P.O.O.P.S. shirt and be around the back table. Welcome to chickens!
