***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have been on site about 3 weeks needed to know some thing about chickens been about 50 years since i had one. Found a wealth of info, built a chicken palace and ordered chicks to day. I always had white chickens in the past, this time i ordered 5 different kinds and a slwyandotte rooster.a brown egg chickens. may be they will help with my retirement. I live in the Grand lake area of Oklahoma Richard mc

Quote: Thanks! I love ducks! This is the structure for our new coop. It will be two-story round with cordwood walls. This is the structure for the second level. We're using all recycled stuff we have including tree limbs that were cut down a couple of years ago and have just been sitting here plus pallets we're taking apart. Hoping to build a green roof of some kind but not really sure how to do that.

Okay, so talked to the dh bout silkies for our daughter, he seems alright with the idea. So I guess whenever someone has some babies or extra we are in the market for a silkie.

Welcome back to the world of chickens....just be careful, it can very easily become an addiction and the people on this site are nothing but a bunch of enablers...lol
I started with 8 RIR pullets and 1 Royal Palm turkey, last year, I now have 6 turkeys, over 50 chickens, all different breeds and 4 incubators with 16 turkey eggs, and probably 40 or so chicken eggs, thank God I have a very loving, understanding hubby.

This is one of my very favorite threads on this website: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/733198/paypal-hatching-eggs-chicks-swap
oh! and this one too! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/631861/diy-thread-lets-see-your-inventions
See? I am an enabler too!

So, remember how I said that I was gona go to the auctions, look around before deciding on chicks an all? It didn't happen, we went to tractor supply, heard cheep cheep and immediately heard my daughter say can we get them. Think I could say no, nope I couldn't. So we came home with 10 chicks, 5 they said are red sex-link pullets, 2 buff cochin bantams, 2 buff rocks, and 1 blue Andalusian. What was nice was they guy overseeing the chicks was a chicken guy himself named Wayne an he was very knowledgeable. He knew about the chicken breeds an even heard about byc an when I mentioned later on getting silkies once we know what we are doing, he knew bout them an mentioned a few characteristics. All in all not bad at all. On a side note, as we were checking out my dh mentioned that now since we got the chicks his sister would go into labor. We got home an 10 mins later my mom in law says my sister in laws water broke in the car. So happy day we have chicks and we have a baby on the way!

Hello everyone. I am new to chickens and to BYC. Just to tell you a lil bout myself: I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister aunt, friend.

I am doint the same thing... only our beds are 5'x20' and there are 3 of of them! I got one done... two more to go.

The weather has been absolutely beautiful after the rainy day this week. My baby seedlings were out Wed, Thurs, and will be again today. I hope to be planting my seedlings next week outside. I planted my peas, potatoes, and some onions on Monday before the rain came in.

We mulch our garden paths with wood mulch (Free from the Tulsa Green Waste Recycle...) and mulch the beds after they are planted with grass/hay/straw or whatever we can get enexspensively.

We are picking up the wood for our new coop this weekend. And hope to have it finished in 2 weeks, and then getting our chicks soon after that.

Good luck on your garden beds!

Angela

This week I have been working on digging runner grass roots and small trees out of 200 feet (2 foot wide) of new beds and mulching w/ 6 inches or so deep of cedar wood chips, I have finished 150 feet of it. Hoping if the weather is decent I'll get it finished Friday.
