Naked Necks are a breed that carry the NN genes.
When you cross an Ameraucana with some other breed and get a bird that lays a blue or green egg, it is called an Easter Egger or EE.
With a Naked Neck,if you cross with another breed and get a bird with a naked neck, it is still called a Naked Neck. The chicks born from a naked neck cross that do not have naked necks are an outcross than didn't get the NN gene or basically just a mutt or barnyard special.
Hope that makes sense. I am sure Les can explain it better.

So it there an easy(ish) way of tellling if you are getting a NN, vs a chicken w/ some NN heritage (mixed w/ other stuff). Obviously a trusted breeder would be easy. But like in Amer vs EE the leg color, or feather colors etc....

If you are outcrossing an NN to another breed about half will be NN/s but you won't be able to tell until they hatch. If you breed a NN to a NN then you will get a NN.
If you are trying to improve color or leg color then you have to outcross to a breed that has those characteristics. aka yellow legs etc.

Hello
I am having a problem with my herd. About 3 weeks ago they started eating there eggs shell and all now they are just eating the insides and leaving the shell. I can't find the ones who are doing this there is no yolk or stuff on there faces everyone has a clean face Does anyone have any suggestions other than getting rid of everyone in the herd??? thanks I need lots of help

Mine only do it when they aren't getting enough to eat. You might try getting more feed out for them in several places & watch for the low hen/roo on the pecking order as it may be easier to eat the eggs than fight to get some food. Good luck.

I've read that if you use an empty egg shell and fill it with yellow mustard, it helps to break the egg eaters. Apparently I'm not the only one that doesn't like mustard. you blow the egg out and use a syringe to insert mustard into it. Then you place it in the nest like usual. Make sure you gather eggs as often as possible to avoid them getting the good eggs.

I just spent the afternoon building a brooder/broody pen inside the Serama coop. I want to try and integrate the teenage Seramas into the rest of the flock. It will also come in handy when I wanna let one of the girls hatch eggs. I won't have to completely remove her from the flock.

Andrew has been cleaning the garage out all afternoon. I need to get back out there and help him finish.

I am not having any good luck with broody hens this year.
I had four setting and all were about two weeks along.
One hen died on the nest and the other three quit.
I guess its just too hot for them right now.
I am not gonna let any more stay on the eggs.
Unless we get some cooler weather, this will also be my last batch in the incubator until fall.

I had two Dominiques go broody and both stuck it out. I had one hatch March 31 and another hatch May 17. I had two muscovies go broody together and one got eaten by a predator and the other one gave up three days before the babies were due to hatch. It wasn't her fault, poor thing. There were just too many changes going on with the predators and I had to move her three times. So, her eggs went into the incubator. I have two adorable little ducklings.

I have 2 that have refused to leave the nest for the past few months. I had nowhere to put a broody or babies, so I've been tossing them from the nest. They go for a couple of weeks and then stop for a couple of weeks. I've never left any eggs for them either. The last time I left eggs I had 3 hens go broody on 6 eggs. They hatched out 3 and accidently killed all of them. They needed a separate area to nest and raise babies. I've decided that my eggs scheduled to hatch this weekend will be my last for this year. I've had really ba hatch rates so far and am just tired of dealing with it right now. I may end up setting some more eggs later this summer, but I'm not sure.

Ok back in from chores, evidently I am a bit grouchy today as every thing or person I come in contact with I end up screwing up some how!!! I just busted Heather for not listening for the umpteenth time and she messed around and let one of the goats in the chicken house and then ran it around long enough that the chickens probably wont lay for a week, went to feed the pigs and stepped in water running from the hose that nobody knew was on!!! I am peeved and I have a slight tooth ache, my head hurts, my back hurts, I think I should just go to bed and stay there for two days!!!! I will leave you all alone now, have a great evening!!!! Lynn

One of the latest "off label" cures suggests that drinking two bottles of Gatorade will help get rid of a headache. I haven't tried that yet for myself - but what could it hurt to try it?
