***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Finally got the 200 feet of 2 feet wide beds finished (or 100 feet of 4 feet wide) Even got 2 of the 10x10 beds finished, 2 more to go. Those are the areas between the 10 ft "spurs" of raspberries, strawberries and garlic.

I was going to allow the big fence run I just completed to be fallow until fall when I plant one side in forsythia, but instead I am planning on getting some raw peanuts from the store and planting those. I figured they are legumes so they should fix nitrogen, take up space so hopefully less grass trying to take back over, and good fodder for meat buns if I get them this year. Also inexpensive to plant and can take the sun.
Way to go on your progress!

It is so hard to let ground go fallow. Right now we are in the dig it an mulch it phase, because I just can not keep up with getting it planted.

We are preparing our yard to put dwarf fruit trees in the front. Our neighbors probably think we are lunatics, be cause we have mounds of mulch place at what look like random spots in our front yard.

Today we shoveled compost.... and then bought wood for our coop! Yay!

Buster it is awesome that your daughter is moving closer & wants to farm! I totally understand your situation, for months we debated on moving back into town & put our build on hold. Illness sets things back on the farm & it just snowballs. Taking care of yourself is the top priority! Thankfully you can live your farm dreams through your daughter. What an awesome father / daughter relationship you will nurture.
Taron turned 13 this weekend so we took several of her friends to great wolf lodge.....you can just imagine the fun of a road trip with 4 teenage girls.

They had lavender, black and splash. Mostly roosters. Big nice healthy birds. Sorry don't remember what they went for. For your viewing pleasure, they are almost 2 weeks old....
Adorable!!

Man! You are making me feel lazy! I haven't gotten to garden building yet. Just seed germination. I would love to see pictures of your gardens.

Are you on the Police Dept? And do you live in Tulsa? And what was the gangs 101 Seminar about?

Going to the auction sounds so fun but it would be absolute torture because we would have to come home empty handed every time.

LOL. It was the only Marans cage that wasn't a pair. They were 2 pullets. I'm kicking myself for not bidding on the splash and white Marans, but at least I got her business card. nOnce I get another pen and coop built, I plan to contact her! Where were you sitting/standing? You might have seen me. I had just come from a Gangs 101 seminar in Tulsa as the auction started and still had on my navy pull over that said "POLICE" on the back.

BanjoJoe

I follow you on FB. I love all the pics! Your chickens are wonderful and so pretty.

My daughters wants to go back to chickens for their 4H project. So we need a pair of show quality girls. I preferr bantams because we technically will be over our limit because i want 6 standard laying hens.

Is it better to just buy chickens.... Or get eggs/chicks from show stock and hope for the best as you raise them.

I know nothing about show standards or shiwing. So could we visit your place? Help where do I start??

if your looking for some show birds for her it would be best to get birds from a breeder and juviniles or started birds would be best that way you know what quality of birds you are getting

if i have a breed that she is interested in then just let me know and i will fix her up

you can also go to the shows and look at the sell birds but please remember that just because they are at a show selling birds dose not mean they are breeders or that they are showing or even that the birds they are selling are show quality

i plan on going to pryor if i have time i could help you pick out some then if you would like like

Well Today... this afternoon we are beginning demolition of the old coop.

I didn't want to spend the money on the wood for a new coop, and my hubby would not build a scrap wood coop.... so tried and I tried justifying patching the old one. But I just have to face the facts and tear this one down.

The exterior wood is rotten. The interior walls are separating. Last year rats got access to underneath, got in the coop for food, and they actually had a nest in the walls of the coop last summer before I resorted to rat poison.

It was a temporary solution and just needs to go.

Last night it was solidified when my hubby bought the wood for the new coop. :) It is more costly than I wanted (I am a cheapskate) but I know that it will be worth it to keep our new flock safer and more comfy. :)

Out with the old...................
