***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi Maribeth,
I was at Mary's for awhile. Didn't buy any birds just a few tools.
I talked to Michael on the phone after I got home. He said that working in the heat this past week had worn him out and he was gonna try and get some rest this weekend.
So that is the main reason he wasn't at Mary's.
I talked to Pat a little bit and Jared and had a good visit with Calvin who usually sets up his birds with Michael.
Jared had a grand time talking game birds with him. I learned a few things just by listening. Amazing how that works.
I am heading off to Falls Creek on Monday so I won't be on the board all next week.
I think I have all my birds set up to where they can be easily cared for.
I gave Okiechick some chicks just to lighten the load still have a lot.

Well the teenage chicks have been in their integration pens for a few days. We did some restructuring and reconfiguring of our property today. DH was on a tractor for most of the day. We leveled some places out and cleaned up a bunch of junk. In doing all of this, I was trying to figure out where to put a grow out pen for my NN. We opted for moving the OEGB pen and placing the grow out pen where it was easily viewable from the kitchen window. I decided to give full integration a shot on the OEGB. I placed the pen and coop where I wanted and secured the sides by shoveling dirt around the edges. That way the birds couldn't accidentally dig out while scratching. I've had it happen before. I put the chicks in the pen and gave them some time to scratch around and get comfortable. It didn't take long and they were home. I, then placed the adults in the pen. They immediately went and checked the babies out. I guess they deemed them worthy, because they're weren't any squabbles. The first altercation came about 30 minutes later when one of the hens decided that one of the pullets was getting a little too close to her blade of grass. The only fits that have been thrown were just shows of dominance. Nothing that even needed interference. I'm quite proud of my birds. They have learned to get along. There are now 7 hens, 1 rooster, 5 pullets, and 1 cockerel in the pen. The babies are actually only about 1/2-3/4 the size of the adults, but they are getting along great.

Went to Blanchard this evening it was good to see some BYC'ers. by the way P&B, it was me, not Okracefan there. there was nothing I was interested in so I left early. I finally got to work on my pen today but it is still not ready for birds yet but I am selling my LF Cochins and that will open up another pen. I can get serious about breeding for blue Orps. then.

I let the grown ups and the big kids free range all day, they get locked into their coop at night. The broody mama and her babies go into a chicken tractor / brooder thing I made for them. I was letting them just run around all day, but two got eaten by snakes and one got eaten by a hawk. We like to come up with interesting names. My four ten week old chicks, I have Calvin and Hobbes, a cockerel and a pullet both Dominique, RIR crossed. Then Lietenant Liebovitz there has a matched pullet named Yeoman Rand.

So glad to hear Doc has made it home to Peaches and the family!

Spent the morning in the hen coop/pen this morning while hubby went to the auction at the Shawnee Expo center.
Built a dustbath box like one described in the Summer issue of the Hobby Farm Chicken magazine. The girls were quickly bathing up a storm....just in the dirt/med mix. Hadn't yet added the sand and DE! Had a nice sized plastic bin for the growout pen. The teens went nuts running to the corner. I just stood there and watched ...first one little pullet, then another let curiosity win them over.

Hubby comes home to get the trailer to go pick up his purchases so I clean up and go with him...a battery charger, a Troybilt pressure washer and a Polaris Ranger....boys and their toys.

Garden looks great...1/4 inch rain this morning wasn't enough though. We're still pouring on the water. Beans planted this week are up. Potatoes will be dug middle of the week. Have so much cabbage ready at the same time...may have to put on a 5 gallon crock of kraut. Now where is that antique shredder.....

Well, I didn't make Blanchard tonight and it sounds like just as well. Went to a house auction this AM and spent my fortune on junk and spent the day hauling it home. Wife bought 4 ricks of firewood for $17. Man she is good!

The house was so cool. I have to share it with BarnSwallow and the Cookie man.4 acres, clean, nice outbuildings next to a gorgeous creek. Neatest thing was the house was built into the side of a hill. Cool in the summer warm in the winter and completely tornado proof. Foreclosure deal. Didn't sell, but got the minimum the bank will take for it.

Sorry about that. I was confused between you and your brother at the auction and then confused again on the thread. I must be getting old

Morning everyone, yes I am up early on a Sunday! No not for work, the wind actually woke me, I went to bed early last night and about 1:30 am, was awakened by the wind banging stuff around and then the rains came!!! It is still raining but the wind has died down some, the Dish network went out for about 15 minutes, was trying to check the weather!!! The worst thing about the Dish networks is the weather interferes with them, usually when you need them the most!!! I am really enjoying the baby guineas that have hatches, they are so funny to watch, I just love the little Pied Lavender that hatched, think I will keep all the lavenders and have the pearl looking one sold to one person or another if he doesn't take them. I took some pics of some of my Game roosters and posted them on here a while back, the one that I have as my avatar I had named "Brat" he was such a brat while young, he would always beg for grass or treats standing at the cage door!!! Well anyways I put him with a beautiful bluered hen and have 4 eggs so far from him in the bator!!! Have hatched out a few from his sister which is also pictured in my avatar, she is what I call a Lemonblue color and I put her with the Copper Blur Brother that didn't get a topknot ( they are half BlueRed Toppy and half Hatch?) The two brother I mentioned came from this cross and one came with a slite topknot behing his comb and the other did not. Otherwise they are almost twins, the Topknotted brother is in with a Beautiful BrownRed Toppy hen I bought at Guy Rose Auction a few weeks back!!! I do love my Games, am getting too attached to some of them and running out of pens to keep them all. I will be selling off some come next spring I am sure, after they all feather out good and I can see what colors I come up with and what will go into next years breeding pens. Working on My Doms and Punkin Hulseys also, trying to build up my flock of each and it is slow going on them. But I will persist and cull and work on improving what I have. That is my favorite part of raising my chickens, I love breeding for color and I especially like the blue color. One of my goals is to someday cross my Blues and my Doms and end up with some Blue Doms or Dun Doms!!!! Sounds like the rain is slowing down outside, we really needed this long steady rain, I am sure my little pond is filling up with this one. May have to do some frog giggin soon!!!! Have a great day all, I will check in later!!! Lynn

GOOOOOOOD MOrning Okies!
Beautiful morning. we got another 1/4 inch around 3 this morning and the temps outside are below 70.

Checked all the "babies" and everyone survived the rains...no one hunkered down chilled...everybody was up and clucking/cheeping.
