***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hello all! I've got a problem, so I have come to the experts! :) My 5yo granddaughter has been bugging me to get some chicks, so when one of the hens went broody, I thought it would be great fun and a great learning opportunity for us to hatch some chicks ourselves. I found some eggs not too far away that were from some pretty good chickens, waited for the weekend so that she could be around when they hatched, we made her a spot in the corner and boxed it off, and put her eggs under her. That was a week ago Saturday... tonight I went out to lock the chickens up and there she was, in one of the next boxes and NOT on her eggs. Apparently she'd flown out and didn't bother to fly back in. :( I felt the eggs, and I'm sure they're ruined.

I'm torn about what to do. The hen was broody for nearly a week before we put the eggs under her, that means she's been broody for 2wks already. IF I got more eggs, would she stay on them until they hatch? I know I would definitely have to come up with a way to keep her from returning to the laying nests. I was afraid she'd do that when we started this, but I thought by paneling off a corn for her, she'd stay put. Guess she won't without a top! :(

My next idea was trying to find some new chicks to put under the hen the day she's supposed to hatch. Anyone tried this? Would the hen accept them IF I could even find some?

Anyone have any thoughts or other ideas?

I don't have a lot of broody hen experience, but have had several to go broody, two that accepted a move from the laying nest to a broody nest and continued to sit on the eggs, two that have not, no matter what I did if I moved those two hens to a new location they would abandon the eggs/nest.

I have put <3days old chicks under all 4 and they have all 4 accepted the chicks, 3 at the 21ish day and one at about a week of being broody. I only had one of the 3 to actually hatch the eggs. The two that were determined to set in a unsafe spot I just let set on one egg until I was ready w/ incubated chicks, then at night moved them to the nest I wanted them in w/ the chicks, they accepted the spot w/ the chicks that they wouldn't w/ the eggs.

I've had that same thing happen several times in the last couple of years it won't hurt her to set more eggs under her if she does it again you might consider breaking her up from being broody, I had to limit the number of nest boxes the hens could get into to keep mine from playing musical nests they have at times changed nest boxes every 4 or 5 days killed a lot of eggs doing it too, just mark the set eggs so you can pull out any fresh one other hens will lay along with her, Of course that's just my opinion I'm sure some wouldn't let her set any longer than she has to but it didn't hurt mine any in the end, good luck with her though :)

I have come to the experts! :)

I was told once that an Expert was; Ex - as in Past Tense, & Spurt - as in Drip Under Pressure

And with that bit-O-silliness I'm off to lie awake and hope to motivate myself to go to work in the morning,

Hope everyone has a great first week of Fall, It has felt the part here so far LOL

lol Eldon... you are all experts to me! I appreciate everyone's input and ideas, that's why I come here! :)

Although I'm so very tempted to hunt down eggs from so new beautiful breeds I don't already have, I'm leaning towards buying some chicks and seeing if I can get the hen to accept them. Until I have a better way to keep my broody hens on the eggs they are supposed to be sitting on, and out of the laying nests, I am probably better off trying the chicks. My granddaughter is going to be crushed when I tell her we won't be hatching eggs, but new chicks will make her forget the disappointment I'm sure. I was so looking forward to candling the eggs with her.... she would've LOVED that! She's been wanting to build a pen, so I guess we'll just concentrate on that for now and then we'll be ready for the next broody hen! Now I just hope Atwoods has some chicks in! :)

Well I knew my Americaunas were gonna start laying soon due to the squating and sure enough we got our first greenish egg. I also knew that with a break in the heat there would be some more eggs and yesterday we had 4. I've got 8 girls and I am really looking forward to the bounty they will provide.

Thank you! Merle isn't a desirable color for the show ring but I love it. She's just a pet anyway. How big is your little lady now?

She weighs about 45-50 lbs right now. We are in the disaster stage of trying to teach her that the kitchen counter-tops, and tabletops are off limits to her now that she can easily reach them much less just see whats up there. :/ lol

This was her at around 14 wks. She thinks she is as small as our yorkie. :)
