***OKIES in the BYC III ***

On the broodies, what i do is let them set on non viable eggs, meanwhile the bater is growing the ones i want and once they have pipped i give them to the hens to raise, speaking of which- here is a silkie chick from one of betsies eggs from the swap- still waiting to see if the other will hatch- he is now with licorice, my cochin broody from heck- she is only happy with little ones-

This is one of the males that came with my Silkies (to supposedly keep them warm in 95 degree heat). I had assumed they were RIR's and about 1/2 of have plain red feathers growing in. The other 1/2 looks like this so i think maybe they put 2 different breeds in there. Anyone know what breed this ?

Some RIRs have lacing like that when they are chicks.

this is what they looked like at the end. i sold them at auction they went for 1$ a piece.

You can feed human food scraps to your chickens. You birds need a source of protein and essential vitamins in a balanced diet.
Are others birds losing weight also?
Could be your rooster have mites or worms.
Check his bumm feathers for tiny black specks clustered on the feathers close to the skin. Check his poo...is it off color or watery. Is he drinking lots of water? These could be indications that he needs to be treated.
Not all birds in the flock will get mites at the same time but if I find one, I treat them all.

Thanks all other birds are great. I wormed them so that's not it & no mites? He has now started to sleep on the floor under nest boxes instead of on roost & there is room? I don't know, he seems fine other than these things. I do have another roo that has just started to crow they get along but could this have something to do with how he's acting? any advice?

Anyone have any experience with Black Copper Marans? About what age would they start developing red combs and wattles? And does a chicken lay an egg before she has a comb/wattles? (sorry for newbie ignorance!)

I am not positive on how old my BCM are, but they are over 3 months at least. I was thinking that they were 4 1/2 months old right now. I feel like all my chickens stopped growing.... :/
No they will not start laying until they have well developed comb and wattles. I would say my BCMs lay between 25 and 30 weeks (6-7 months)- somewhat later than most breeds but they are a dual purpose and long-lived bird. I've heard as long as 50 weeks to POL but that is by far an exception to the norm.

My Marans started laying about 5-6 months old and lay daily most of the time. time to time they skip a day.

Thank you! My BCMs dont have a comb or wattles yet. One is getting red around the face but its comb is black and short still. :/ Guess I have more time left than I thought! :)
