***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I never would have thought of AI... Googling. Would need to replace my roo still, but if I could get over the initial squeamishness.... And I used to make jokes about the turkey baster...

I would give you one of my hormonal jerks but I have full intention on eating them. mmmm roasted 'dotte with gravy.

Hey, out of all those chicks you got now there's bound to be a boy in there.

There are 13 in the freezer camp pen unless I decide one of the Blue cockerels gets a reprieve as a breeder. And there are some 12 to 16 week olds that will be kept as possibles and the rest will go to the freezer camp pen. Seems like in the Spring I was pullet rich and now I'm looking at a bunch of male tails!

ShelbyDog...are you sure you are just coming to pick up some pullets or can I stick a nice cockerel or two into the box?

Don Gibson was here today for a nice visit and he left me with a handsome trio of Buckeye from his hatch this year AND he brought the rest of the Delaware Bantams! I just love that breed! They are so friendly, calm and inquisitive.

This means for next Spring I can have two pens of Delaware Bantams, three pens of Rosecomb Bantams, two or three of D'Anvers and two of OEGB... 9 - 10 Bantam pens.
Then for the Large fowl... Two to three pens for Cochin, four to five pens for the Wyandotte varieties and one for the Buckeyes.... 7 - 9 pens
Ah....that's a lot of pens...a lot of eggs and a lot of feed...a lot of chicks and a lot of culls for a few breeding keepers.

Only if I they are oven ready!!! LOL. I got those 2 dingleberries in a small A frame pen I set up using 5 ft dog kennel panels.

I can pick one up for Kyzmette if she's interested.

I love roosters-much to my own disappointment. it takes them until their 2nd spring to quit wearing the feathers off the girls. Maybe you can find 1 that's a couple yrs old.

Oh you're so lucky! No one more deserving either!

Is anyone interested in some White and Brown Leghorn pullets? (10 total) They're 2 wks old and growing like crazy. I want to order some Delaware pullets and I've got too many chicks as it is. I figure if I can sell the Leghorns for what I paid ($35) I can get my Delaware pullets that I want.

Question... I have a hen who lays ostrich-sized eggs, but a coyote got my roo. She's my favorite girl, and she's kind of gimpy, so I'm leery of setting her up with a stud roo who might hurt her. How would I go about getting her set up with a roo in order to get some eggs of hers to incubate to possibly breed some jumbo layers?
The offspring won't necessarily lay jumbo eggs as well, as half their genetics will come from their dad, but I think it's worth a try. Try for a rooster from a breed also known for very large eggs.

Why not learn to AI (artificial insemination) her if you are worried a rooster might hurt her. You will have better fertility.
Also. extra large eggs don't necessarily produce bigger sized birds. Even a chick hatched from a medium sized egg will catch up to a chick hatched from a large egg.

Someone was just posting about the delicacies of AI with chickens on the Cream Legbar thread, post 2603 and for several after. 2613 has the most info. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/509483/cream-legbars/2600
IMO just leave it to the roosters to do their job.... Ksane's suggestion of getting a mature rooster that is already several years old is a better idea. Remember chickens often live to 5 or 6 years old, and even older, if they are well cared for and a predator doesn't get them. Also, I would assume a lighter breed would be easier on hens than a heavy breed, but that is just to my thinking, no experience there.

I am interested in two or three white leghorn pullets. I forget which direction you are... do you ever come Tulsa way?

Channing wants to say hi. We're in the RV, I'm supposed to be cleaning it so we can take it camping. Channing and the Chihuahua are going camping also :)
