I have a sliver, bantam Frizzle Silkie rooster that needs a home. I have two and they have gotten along well until today. One is chasing the other away and pulling out feathers now, I don't want them to get hurt. They are not good meat birds and are friendly. Makes me very sad to have to give one away. I love them both very much. I'm in Tuttle.

Ksane,

Hatch day was Sunday - but for some reason, all of my chicks have hatched late (except for one - it was hatched when I took them out of the big incubator to the small one I use for a hatcher). I did peak this morning, and there was one pip....but nothing else. I don't want to mess anything in progress up. So no opening up to look. :( I thought I heard something this afternoon, but who knows. I think I will give them at least another day...but am not very optimistic.

The auracanas have been in for just over a week - I want to say that some were growing - but it was hard for me to tell with the eggs that small and dark. What I do know is that all but one of my blrw were growing (yaay!) and NONE of my own brown eggs were. ***? I now have all of my barred rocks penned together. Maybe too much free roaming was distracting the rooster.

Hate to be pessimistic...but I am liking the putting new eggs into the bator every week or two. It saves the amount of time in between hope and disappointment. ;)

Went to Lowes to get some siphon tubing to rack the wine, walked by the lighting section and saw this one light fixture that was a group of pendants all hung at different levels the light was in a jar like fixture that screwed to a lid. It was $200 so I was thinking mason jars would work as well and be kinda a statement piece. We stopped by the dollar store and found these jars that the pizza restaurants put the fake parmasian cheese in, I thought they looked cooler then the mason jars, so I got 10 of them and am going to make that fixture for about $30 total. Was thinking instead of a smooth piece of wood or metal on the ceiling that the pendants hang from a muffin tin would look cool.

@Ksane I will let you know if the caponizing is successful.

Hey, all. I just picked up some nice chickens from a guy in Duncan. They are hybrid layers that lay big brown eggs. Red Star pullets from Murray McMurray hatched in May of this year. He said he has 700 of them for sale for $12 each, or $10 if you buy in large quantities. Here's a representative sample...

And this is how they are kept...

We bought 10 on Sunday to try them out. Found 9 gorgeous brown eggs on Monday and 10 today. We are going back to pick up a BUNCH more this weekend, so you'd better get 'em while they are hot.

:)

Here's his Craigslist ad:

The pone number is wrong, though. It's 580-470-5022.

And here's Murray McMurray hatchery's info on the Red Star hybrid super-layer:

Hope all is well with everyone!

This is so addicting! I've got the Gold Lace Brahma & a Dark Brahma egg in there and it was so depressing to realize that if/when they hatched I wouldn't have any more babies to look forward to :-( So I set some more Silkie mix eggs and started gathering up some more Cochin/Ameraucana mix eggs lol
@Ksane I will let you know if the caponizing is successful.
Thanks, Kass. Very much appreciated.

I had that problem too with some eggs - although they were only a few days old when symptoms started. One chick survived - it was affected and I started with baytril on it. I sent a sample to OSU, but the infection had occurred earlier, caused the damage, and was gone by the time I sent the sample in - so they were unable to positively identify the problem. Is Tetroxy HCA prescription?
No you can get Tetroxy at the feed store. Baytril is what OSU said to try but the vet said the FDA has made it illegal to use Baytril on poultry. They still do in Canada though he said! So he went to the next best choice according to the OSU testing results which was generic Bactrim.

Great to meet you! I haven't been on here long and already have found a wealth of chicken education! I am so glad they have BYC! Sounds like you have a great little farm going... good luck with finding the goats. I would love to have one just as a natural lawn mower.

I have never seen so many chickens in my life!!! I would love to spread loads and loads of spaghetti noodles all over that place just to watch them all...

These are the 2 Cochin/Ameraucana/EE mixes. The dad is Cochin/Ameraucana and their mom's are EE sisters. It's so much more special to me to have chicks out of chicks that I had hatched and raised myself. These chicks would be....grandchicks of the Cochins from my very 1st hatch 2 1/2 yrs ago :)
You can't tell from these angles but they do have beards and pea combs. I want to do straight Cochin/Ameraucana crosses and get heavy feathered legs at the same time. These 2 chicks are way laid back and sweet.
