***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Ksane, cross your fingers for me, because I have Silver Grey Dorking eggs in the bator right now. I don't have great hopes for them, so I need all the crossed fingers I can get.

Kass your lamp idea sounds cool! While reading it I was picturing a branch off this tree I just cut down, fitted with mason jars. Very cool.

Kass - I haven't been on the thread for a few days. MIL is recovering from back surgery (Mercy Hospital in OKC), and she's having a rough time. She went from surgery to ICU to a rehab center to the hospital once more. Symptoms of infection in more than one system prompted the return to the hospital.

I had to read your post about losing your flock three times before it sank in. I often pass small packs of stray dogs on our country roads, and each group reminds me that my free-range group is at risk. When we get together, we'll go through the pens to see if I have anything you can use. I'm supposed to be downsizing, so I've got a few pullets marked to keep as egg layers. If you want to take the capons you make here home with you, that would be fine too. I have more than DH wants me to raise. The buggers just keep eating and growing.

Is she doing any better now?

She's got symptoms that resemble pneumonia and symptoms that would indicate a kidney infection. The rehab hospital wasn't a good place for a diagnosis, so she's been sent back to the hospital where her initial surgery was done. She's got a high pain tolerance, so I know she's in bad shape because she's not able to manage with the pain meds provided by her doctor.

Went to blanchard aucion sat an the chicken prices wer way up. SOME peep said it was because i was ther i dont no wat that would have to do with it. Buster thim hens like you bot brot 12,50 each at blanchard he brot about 20 of thim. Bantums pfowl an rabbits wer all up. IT would be a awsome sale if they didn't sale so much junk ..

I had trouble with Isbars from February until August with the exact same type of problem, I would lose all the chicks one at a time from 3-4 weeks. If I was really careful and dosed them with Tetroxy HCA I might manage to save one out of 10-15. Did OSU testing and found out the hens were passing e. coli bacteria to the chicks through the eggs. Poor things didn't stand a chance. Had to get an RX from a vet to cure the adults, Bactrim. Just as I finished up the Bactrim regimen a neighborhood dog got into my yard, ripped their run door open, and killed my rooster. Of course.

Vet said in his opinion it was from whomever I got my hens from and had been passed to them via the egg. I just got lucky I was able to raise them to maturity (they were hatching eggs). Won't buy from that breeder ever again.
I think I want to try Bactrim. How can I get it and how is it administered?
I had trouble with the chicks that were from from my Wheaten Ameraucana rooster and Wheaten hens. The chicks from that same rooster with my Blue Ameraucana hen all survived. i suspect it may indicate that the pure Wheaten bloodlines may be "too narrow" (?)
I lost a bunch of Blue Marans too. Also lost most of my Mille Fleur Cochin chick and those genetic are all over the place. I am stumped and sick about all of those babies.
It was such a lovely, cool Summer weather-wise but not at all a good one for my breeding programs. i didn't have fertile eggs from my Self-Blue Cochins. As I am getting improved type their cushions are getting fluffier so fertility is going down. If i don't get better results after I pluck their poor bottoms, i guess A.I. is my next option. - Already anticipating Spring which will include a Sportsman incubator and hatcher!

SOONER CLASSIC--Traditional Table Top Serama Show was held at Keystone Lake, Saturday Oct. 26...It was a REALLY great show. We had exhibitors from several states and as far as Alabama and New York. Some really nice birds. Weather was good and we had the best hot dogs ever for lunch! Here are a few photos. ...and yes, that's Bob Warren.

My silkied roo 'Redman' placed Best of the Best.

My birds also got Reserve to Best of the Best, Reserve Malay female and Reserve Malay male.

And my 'Snowman' Reserve Silkied Champion to Best in Show 'Redman'.

Fantastic!

These are the 2 Cochin/Ameraucana/EE mixes. The dad is Cochin/Ameraucana and their mom's are EE sisters. It's so much more special to me to have chicks out of chicks that I had hatched and raised myself. These chicks would be....grandchicks of the Cochins from my very 1st hatch 2 1/2 yrs ago :)
You can't tell from these angles but they do have beards and pea combs. I want to do straight Cochin/Ameraucana crosses and get heavy feathered legs at the same time. These 2 chicks are way laid back and sweet.

It will be interesting to see what color of eggs they lay!

I am sorry, hospitals are the worst place for infection. Hope they get a handle on it soon. Are you guys still in The City?
