Come to the Shawnee Expo Center tomorrow - State poultry show there; alot of birds to admire, and you might get a good sense of what breed you may wanto to start with.Hi, I'm Carol from Shawnee. Chickens are beautiful and amazing, arent they? I don't have any chickens yet, but would like to have them. I must find out the rules in
I want some of the splash marans. I'll need pullets to go with my splash marans rooster.
The Maran club will be set up at Shawnee, that is a positive sign for anyone looking for the breed in good quality birds. This may be their National I don't recall at the moment as I don't really keep up with that breed.
I work Saturdays so won't be at the Shawnee show.
Had I been living in the country when my daughter was growing up I would have had her in 4H... How I combated empty nest syndrome is to fill my empty nest with chickens, turkeys and an assortment of other feather and four legged critters. Please incourage your kids to get more involved with the hobby and showing it is a very rewarding hobby that will help keep them pointed down the right path without costing you a small fortune in feed.
Taking your granddaughter with you to shows and auctions are a good way for her to learn about what kind of birds she likes. My bet is on some silkies but I could be wrong...I actually contacted the local 4H regarding getting my six year old granddaughter involved just a few days ago. I was going to try to get my hands on some breeding standards at the show so I can help get her started.

That is something we probably need to discuss soon is when and where we are going to have the next POOPS. I really liked having it at Newcastle. That was really nice and then the auction afterwards was a great addition to a day already packed with chickeny goodness....Hehehe!I can't wait for POOPS! I don't think I will get that way except for something like that. It will be great to meet some of the BYCers and maybe come home with a few more feathered kids. On the 4-H comment above, I agree. My 10 yr old daughter wasn't into chickens until we got some. She (and I) fell in love with them and now we are buying more and more and more... all the while my husband shakes his head and keeps trying to tell us that we have a limit. Yah, my daughter and I don't know what limit is. She however just joined 4-H in November and she is so excited to show. Even though she was in it just so she could show she learned a lot from them in one meeting that she came home telling me all sorts of information that I hadn't known yet. My husband went with her and even he learned some! LOL! Kids don't know until we pass it on to them. She told me that she loves chickens now and this is something she will enjoy for the rest of her life if she chooses to get some of her own one day. I'm happy for her because I just LOVE mine!
So, does anyone know of a Silkie breeder in NE Oklahoma? I am looking for one for my son. I know I will end up having to get more than one if they are chicks so I can get a pullet but that is kinda what I have been doing with my other breeds. If they are not chicks then that is awesome. I'm also looking for Frizzles or even Sizzles. My daughter (the one I mentioned) wants a small variety. Just like her mother...
We were hoping to get to come by but the truck broke down and had to deal with that... yeah.....The white Maran is being so considered for acceptance into the SOP so there will be at least 50 birds for consideration.
Spent several hours this evening at the Expo Center and saw some really nice birds already cooped and many in the sales area. Left about 6pm just as the rain was starting. See ya'll bright and early Saturday morning.
I was thinking of wearing my pink POOPS shirt tomorrow, too... We will be twinkies!!Come to the Shawnee Expo Center tomorrow - State poultry show there; alot of birds to admire, and you might get a good sense of what breed you may wanto to start with.
Talk to anyone wearing a POOPS shirt - I will wear my pink one and my red Red Wings hockey hoody tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
couldn't help but laugh at the cornish description- i got my girl Colette from Coral and adore her- totally different than any of the others-Just got back from the Shawnee show and got the birds settled. Charlie, thank you for these awesome Standard Cornish and Betsy, thank you for the beautiful white Showgirl rooster. These Cornish look like basketballs on tree stumps :-D I'm amazed how gorgeous this White Laced Red boy is. I got them into an 8x8 pen and gave them some of the fermented grain (I was sucking up to them so they'd like me!) and you should've seen him calling his girls and throwing food at them lol That's what I love so much about roosters, they take such good care of their girls.
The Showgirl boy got a bath and a blow dry (for the record chickens *do glare), he'll spend the winter on the heated deck since he has no girls to keep him warm. I've got Frizzle and Sizzle Silkie chicks plus a bunch of regular Silkie chicks so come spring I'll decide which girls he'll get.
I also got a pair of Wheaten Malay, way cool birds. They're another breed I've wanted for a long long time. So I got great birds and I'm really happy with them all
I didn't see Faverolles and I didn't see Dark Brahmas, very surprising.
