What are deacon calves?
My Dad got week-old calves from a dairy farmer friend. He would raise a few every year and have them butchered. I don't know where the name "deacon" came from. There are a lot of different terms in farming up North - we can a hay loft a "Mow" -rhymes with "cow"

Hi Everyone!!!!

I have been off a while. It seems to be I can get on here in spurts. I finally caught up on all my reading. Yay!

I am sorry so many of you are under the weather. Boo. I hope you feel better soon!

Kass... I think it was you who is dealing with sinus infections? I tried everything for mine, and finally found Young Living Essential Oils. I use the "Thieves" and the "RC" blend and they help me to stay ungooped up. Maybe you can check into those? And they are cheaper than antibiotics (we pay for all our meds out of pocket).

Nana and all other cow ranchers. I LOVE the baby pics. I remember calving season from when I was younger. My family stopped farming when I was five but I still remember a lot about it. And I want to go back to it one day. One day we will.

How-day!! to all the newbies I have not met yet! True your kids are in 4H? Mine are too. Our girls are in a club in Broken Arrow, theYFR 4H club. It would be fun to get together at a 4H event some time! :)

I am currently chickenless since ours were all killed by a stray dog. Our little coop is sitting out there empty. :( But I am chatting with Betsy about a pair of Silkies. My daughters want to get eggs to hatch for their own chickens for 4H projects.

I wonder where I can get some eggs?

Is Coweta still having auction this evening?

I have been busy sewing and knitting for Christmas. I went back to work part time. And started teaching knitting lessons in Tulsa once a month. I have let house work go. My oldest has taken over most of the cooking. In fact she is making the Christmas cookies right now! I'm so proud of her. :)

I hope you all stay warm and toasty today! I can feel the temps dropping. Brrrr. We are baking bread today and i have to go to the store. Fortunately we drink mainly Almond and Coconut milk and there usually is still at least 2 or 3 of those in the store. I also have to walk to work this afternoon. Not looking forward to that, but it is not far so it is not too bad.

Have a blessed day everyone!

My 'partridge' was nowhere as dark as yours as a chick. It was basically a creamy white but with light lavender stripes going down. It was from either the paint pen or the b/b/s pen from the markings on the eggs. I was thinking partridge because of the 'barring' on its wing feathers. I kept hoping for lavender - but no lavender eggs were put into the hatcher that that chick came out of. We'll see - I know that (like longhorns) under some genetic circumstances - color can be like a box of chocolates.

If you click on the picture with the three heifers in the front - you can see a bit of the blue color in 'La Nova's' eye.
i really love how long horns look they are so pretty, and they were my high schools mascot.

this i how my silkies look now.

@NotSuperWoman I don't know of any currently, but we may have some coming up. I live in Skiatook and work in Tulsa, and Shelbydog works in Tulsa. Are you looking at starting a new flock? In town or out? Can you have roosters? Do you have a safe pen for them? Do you need show, breeding or egglaying?

I am restarting my flock. I live in the city. Technically there is no ordinance against roosters, but I want to be a good neighbor. I am getting a pair from BetsyOK and those will be my show chickens. So I need 6 more for egg layers. :) I have my preferences... but really I like all types of chickens. I would preferr a double purpose breed for eggs and meat, but eggs are the priority.

We are looking to start hatching eggs for my daughter's 4H project. So I need to find a steady supply of fertile eggs too.

Skiatook is not to far for me to drive, if I ever have the vehicle. We are a one car family, and my hubby works two jobs and goes to school full time, so most of the time we have to walk or take the bus if we go anywhere. I have a safe pen, with a coop elevated off the ground. Right now the run is just covered in chicken wire and bird netting, but we are going to reinforce the bottom half with heavy grade field fencing and plywood. The top is enclosed to keep the hens in and the hawks out.
