Chocolate cheeks, RIP

so sorry about the losses of birds. Hopefully we will get some cooler weather and some rain - but no hail or high winds - from the front that is moving around Oklahoma this evening.

Hope you get your wish.

JKassaundra...soory about your pretty hen too.
This heat is really like an oven and the winds are terrible.

So far, I haven't lost anymore than what we lost two weeks ago...one older hen, the roo Thor from injuries from a squabble with Dudley, and the little chick that hatched with the bad leg. Heat was responsible for the 5 chicks from heat or pile up.

Knock on wood, all the strategies to relieve the chickens from heat stress have been working.
Now softball size hail predicted....hope that doesn't materialize tonight....that might be a problem.

City - Great to see you! Hope you have a wonderful adventure.

I had a great time talking with a new chicken friend in Collinsville. Neat lady. She does wildlife rescue work. She wanted five pullets but was overwhelmed by temptation when she looked into my giant pet carrier. She went home with seven new ladies for her laying flock: New Hampshire Red, White Rock, Barnevelder, Welsummer, two Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, and a White Ameraucanas. The White Rock rode home on a neighbor's lap because they were out of travel cages. It takes a special person to share a seat with a chicken

Joe - Thanks again. The more I read about probiotics the more convinced I am that we need to re-learn what the body needs to stay healthy. Unprocessed and homegrown, that's the direction we need to go.
I'm sorry I don't have any spare frames. You're handy, though, so maybe you can be creative with the scraps you'll have when your uncle finishes cutting boards, especially the pieces that have bits of bark on them. A mitered corner and a groove along the inside edge made with a router and you've got a really nice wood frame. If you come up with a frame that you think looks good, let me know. I'm scouting for some unique frames for a few pieces I planned to show in September.

Kass!

murphies law dictates- the first night outside in the coop, the babies will have to deal with thunderstorms! i'm fighting the urge to go out and bring them in!! arggggg! these are MJ's cochins, and i built a little mini coop for them- so now i am having second thoughts.... good grief mommy overload!! still have a silkiy broody, hopefully some nn will hatch wednesday, and my moma cochin is doing a good job with her brood- how do you reintegrate her into the flock?

Hello Okies!! We are melting here in Texas. The only thing saving our birds and rabbits is a misting system! Its pretty miserable here. We have a small chance of rain in a couple of days and we are hopeful. Hope everyone is doing well!!
