***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Coral, what color Bresse did you get? Were these from some of the Greenfire imports?
I had checked Barrett Valley Farms for eggs...$60 a dozen. Beautiful birds with marbling in the meat supposed to be great table birds.
I bought American White Bresse: four cockerels and four pullets. The parents are Greenfire imports. I'll use the best cockerel and all the pullets, if they are suitable, for breeding next season. After that, if I have some extra hens, I'll put them with Hercule, the NN roo from Kassaundra.

Sounds like you got a great start and a great plan. Keep another cockerel as a reserve...just in case. You could also breed as trios. Looking forward to photos when you get to them.

Hey artsyrobin: Sorry for your lose.
On another note; I was getting supplies at ATWOODS this morning, and noticed an elderly couple going through the baby chicks. Passing by them later I asked if they could tell what they were buying. "Yes! " the gentleman exclaimed. So, we begin discussing the matter of sexing day old chicks. Then, supposedly, a poultry expert joined the conversation, and demonstrated the fastest 98% sure way of sexing them.
He gently scooped up a chick with one hand, spread two fingers apart with the other hand, and gently hung the chick by its head between the two spread fingers, and said:" The chick that draws both feet up towards its body is a pullet. The chick that lets one or both feet dangle straight down is a cockerel ". The one he had dangled one foot. Then we moved to the pre-sexed pullet tub of chicks. He picked up one, and hung it between his fingers. Sure Enough, that chick drew both tiny feet right up against its body. "Pullet" ! I gotta try that out myself.

Oh Robin, I'm so sorry your girl didn't make it. One of these days we'll learn how to talk to chickens and we'll be able to figure out how to help them.

Came home from the auction to good and bad... The bad is that the little white Polish baby escaped its tub and got into a tub with older chickies. They killed her, poor girl. Maybe I'll just accept that Polish aren't for me right now.

The good? I put seven eggs in lockdown, four of my Buff Brahma Bantams, two Splash Marans/EE mixes and a Blue Langshan/EE mix. ALL FOUR of my Brahmas were fluffed and healthy and waiting for me! One of the Marans mixes was fluffy and peppy too! The other two were shrinkwrapped and I assisted hatch, and they're still in that zone where they may or may not make it.

Pictures!
