***OKIES in the BYC III ***

A friend of mine was at the Coweta Auction last night selling birds, she said they did not get to her birds until 2am and they still had lots of birds to go....OMG, is it always like that or did they just have a larger auctioin then usual. That is a long time to sit around waiting to bid on some birds, guess it depends on how bad you want them.

Thursday was hatch day here for me. All the chicks did well except for one, it was internally peeping but never externally pipped. Last night I "zipped" around the air cell but never found a beak. No progress this morning so I helped the chick completely out. It's peeping loudly but obviously weak, is there anything I can give her? I have poly-vi-sol but don't know if I should dilute it or mix it with something. Thanks for any help!

One of my Serama chicks needed assistance, and when hatched was really week. I put some of that Save-a-chick in the water and made sure it got a little drink of it and it was fine after awhile. Still tiny tiny little thing, but walking around eating and drinking.

I stayed until the end of the auction because there were some birds I thought I "might" want, and I needed to wait for my cage to be emptied. Got a neat little cage for two dollars. It needs a few spots straightened, and maybe a little bit of paint, but when that's done I'll have a presentable and usable little cage.

I brought home eight American Bresse juveniles, over fourteen Basque hen juveniles, and some EE juveniles. Oh yeah, and six Basque eggs. I'm envisioning and amazing cross between NN and Breese. The Basque are just too beautiful to pass up. I don't know that many people at the auction saw them, or maybe they didn't know what they were seeing. I'll post some pictures later.

One of the Bresse has cocci symptoms. All the birds I brought home are in isolation and have begun a five-day regimen of Corrid. The one sick cockerel is all by himself. He's not happy. I'll put some toys in with him today.

I think it was five when I got home. DH staggered out into the kitchen to confirm that we didn't have a burglar emptying the dish washer.

He was back in bed, asleep, before I had the last dish in place.

How were the prices at the end? There were some interesting birds there that we don't often see in the OKC area.

Oh you guys talking about auctions are making me antsy to go to one. I know Blanchard has one tonight but I am already in trouble with the husband and too many chicks

Sounds like you guys got some interesting birds. Hope they get healthy for you guys soon. I am pretty sure people did not know what they were looking at.

There are so many breeds of chickens and so many color variations how can a newbie like me learn to identify them? I feel retarded and a bit overwhelmed when i go to auctions and see so many unknown chickens.

Hi all! Haven't been on in over a year. We lost all our babies a while back so I'm starting over again. Just ordered chicks from Cackle. Was horrible loosing mine! We had to move them to a friends while we were moving, and while they were there, something ripped the top off the coupe and ate all my chickens! We had one chick still at our house because it was my sons and we let him keep her in a box in his room. We got all moved and got a new dog for my son. That dumb dog killed his chicken about a month after we got her. Broke my heart because my son was devastated! Got rid of that dog the next week! Hopefully we get a partridge silkie in my order because my son wants another just like his other bird!

Coral, what color Bresse did you get? Were these from some of the Greenfire imports?
I had checked Barrett Valley Farms for eggs...$60 a dozen. Beautiful birds with marbling in the meat supposed to be great table birds.

A hawk killed one of my juvenile birds yesterday just as we were leaving for the hospital for my SIL surgery. We locked up the rest and now I'm going to rearrange the pens again....needed to be done anyway...but the hawk is on my hit list.

Baby 607 had her calf this morning at the vet's office. Will pick her up tomorrow morning.

There are two chicks in ICU today...hatched 36 hours late. Moving the others out to a broody hen in the barn. Humidity must have been low because 7 died in the shell instead of hatching yesterday...never pipped.

Watering flats of plants and seedlings and going to try to get the potatoes planted.....a lot on the plate today.

Enjoy your beautiful Saturday and congrats on all the birds and eggs ...
