Hi everyone! I'm new here. I live in Midwest city. I have wanted chickens for the past several years. Just picked some up on craigslist a couple of weeks ago. Then got suckered into four more from tractor supply, lol. I'm almost finished building their coop, I'll be applying for my permit tomorrow. Can't wait to have them out of my kitchen, lol.
I know practically nothing about chickens, so any advice is welcome. I don't even know what breed/sex most of my chicks are!
Any other Midwest city folks here?

So can you tell the sex of cochin by their comb. I hatched out 4 Standard Cochin last weekend, and would be nice to know what sex they are.
I don't know anything about cochins but others with cochins like nanakat will chime in with their expertise. But from reading the posts when Robin got Sonny they sound hard to sex when they are less than 6 months old.
I have another question (sorry for all the questions, just new at it).. I use to raise parrot's and i know you could breed mother to son and father to daughter but not sister/brother. Is that the same thing with chickens.

Kassaundra: Hercule has a new lady; she's a standard Cornish. I was not able to find any NN ladies at the Coweta sale. There were some bantam barred NNs, but that's moving in the wrong size direction. They are in a moveable tractor, and she's busy nest building. The first day they were together, she wouldn't let him get near her. After several days, she's warmed up. They roost together, and he stands and watches her eat. We'll see what offspring result. I have six NN eggs scheduled to hatch on the 30th, and another ten on April 4th. I hope there will be many pullets in both hatches. Hercule deserves to have a large harem.

Wow! That is a big hen. My splash Marans girl isn't a small bird.Lorie there's a woman named Mikaela, screenname on BYC is rodriguezpoultry, who has gorgeous blue Langshans. She's been working on her line for a while, and they have gorgeous form and color, as well as impressive size. Blue isn't an accepted color for showing yet, but when enough people are breeding them, they could be accepted.
This is one of my girls from Mikaela. She's standing next to a full grown splash Marans.
