Feeding chickens was an adventure this morning. Some of us enjoyed it more than others

Definitely obvious who was not so happy about the chores!!!! lol

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I live in Midwest city. I have wanted chickens for the past several years. Just picked some up on craigslist a couple of weeks ago. Then got suckered into four more from tractor supply, lol. I'm almost finished building their coop, I'll be applying for my permit tomorrow. Can't wait to have them out of my kitchen, lol.

I know practically nothing about chickens, so any advice is welcome. I don't even know what breed/sex most of my chicks are!

Any other Midwest city folks here?

from your neighbor to the east in Henryetta, and

and the Okie thread. Are all your chickens young chicks? I am horrible at telling what breed a chicken is by it's chick look, but if you post some pics bet some of us could narrow down the choices.

You don't have to be a chick identifying expert to tell what breed my babies are

(mine are naked necks)

So can you tell the sex of cochin by their comb.  I hatched out 4 Standard Cochin last weekend, and would be nice to know what sex they are.

I don't know anything about cochins but others with cochins like nanakat will chime in with their expertise. But from reading the posts when Robin got Sonny they sound hard to sex when they are less than 6 months old.

Telling sex on a Cochin is often debatable. Cockerels feather in more slowly than pullets but their wattles and combs grow faster than the pullets. Saddle feathers on pullets will be round tipped while cockerels are pointed.

I have another question (sorry for all the questions, just new at it).. I use to raise parrot's and i know you could breed mother to son and father to daughter but not sister/brother.  Is that the same thing with chickens.

Typically. Unless you are working on a genetic project, then breeding siblings can bring out the best or worst characteristic...cull heavily keeping only the best type.

:welcome to the land of chicken enablers. When you have 6 posts you can begin to upload photos of your birds...we can all try to help identify them.

I have blue and black langshans, I contacted a breeder on the Fb page Langshan Breeders USA who shipped me mine as about 12 week olds. If you want birds now that is a great place to check.

They are WAY bigger than I expected. The blue cockerel I have named Goliath. He comes to my 6 year-old's waist. I have a back-up black cockerel that was an "extra" in my order, and 3 black pullets. By summer I will have blue and black chicks for sale. Anxiously awaiting my first egg from them... I know they don't all have the plum bloom but the breeder I got them from said about 60% of her stock ends up with the plum bloom.

Those are FULL GROWN large fowl Ameraucanas behind him!!!!!

Kassaundra: Hercule has a new lady; she's a standard Cornish. I was not able to find any NN ladies at the Coweta sale. There were some bantam barred NNs, but that's moving in the wrong size direction. They are in a moveable tractor, and she's busy nest building. The first day they were together, she wouldn't let him get near her. After several days, she's warmed up. They roost together, and he stands and watches her eat. We'll see what offspring result. I have six NN eggs scheduled to hatch on the 30th, and another ten on April 4th. I hope there will be many pullets in both hatches. Hercule deserves to have a large harem.

Awesome that is great to hear. Hercule is NaNa so even if his lady has feathers on a perfectly beautiful neck the offspring still are going to be a good chance of being naked necked, just probably w/ a larger bow tie. And still could get carriers of Sc, besides what he really needs is big ladies. I can't wait to see those babies you are hatching!!!!!

Welcome to BYC. I live east of MWC about 10 minutes off I 40. There are 3-4 of us that live out in this area. Lots of great chicken enabling resources in the OKC area! Like someone mentioned, when you get up to so many posts, you can post pictures then we can try and help you identify the chicks!

Lorie there's a woman named Mikaela, screenname on BYC is rodriguezpoultry, who has gorgeous blue Langshans. She's been working on her line for a while, and they have gorgeous form and color, as well as impressive size. Blue isn't an accepted color for showing yet, but when enough people are breeding them, they could be accepted.

This is one of my girls from Mikaela. She's standing next to a full grown splash Marans.

Wow! That is a big hen. My splash Marans girl isn't a small bird.
The Splash Jersey Giants, (trio), at Coweta were really beautiful.
