***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Depending on when they molt, most young heavy breed hens will lay on and off through the winter. Leghorns lay (white) eggs pretty good all year long. Hi-breads, (sex links) are great layers, but seem to slack off after the fall molt till spring. I have some NN that do fairly well through the winter too.

Sorry, I don't know of any roosters that will lay in the winter.

Haha....I meant which roosters are more aggressive, etc. I grew up in a neck of the woods in NE Texas called "Pinhook"....that pretty much describes how far out in the boondocks we were. We had all kinds of animals. Glad you got a good laugh though.
I got 3 Ameraucana hens and an Ameraucana rooster today. If my rooster lays an egg, I'll be rich.

@mjgigax

I meant to ask you about the bantam cochins at the auction....

@muesky

I'll keep you posted how they turn out. I haven't looked at their combs closely to see how many pea rows they have. Just glancing at them only one has a pink comb so I was guessing one male and rest female. That lot was labeled as NPIP but I think that seller has space issue. Lot of their birds were feather picked.
What was your question? My Mille Fleurs are nicer (if I do say so myself)

My Mille girls finally started laying. I set 4 of their eggs last week and 8 more today.

-for me sexing LF Cochins is especially hard unles they are partridge, their color differences show up at about 5 or 6 weeks.
thanks, i will wait until they get a little older, they are just a week old so they have a lot of growing to do. One of them white I believe is HUGE, I am already calling it HOSS...

I've put a lot of thought into this and I'm unfortunately going to have to let Floyd go. I just hate it. Hes SUCH a good roo for the girls, but he's not going to tolerate any other roos in the yard, and eventually I'm going to have to add Einstein, the Cream Legbar to the mix, along with Orlando, the SFH and Lord Dingwald, the Dorking.

Anybody interested in an EE roo who is gentle and good to the girls and isn't human-aggressive at all? If not, he'll have to go to freezer camp.

Came home from the auction to good and bad... The bad is that the little white Polish baby escaped its tub and got into a tub with older chickies. They killed her, poor girl. Maybe I'll just accept that Polish aren't for me right now.

The good? I put seven eggs in lockdown, four of my Buff Brahma Bantams, two Splash Marans/EE mixes and a Blue Langshan/EE mix. ALL FOUR of my Brahmas were fluffed and healthy and waiting for me! One of the Marans mixes was fluffy and peppy too! The other two were shrinkwrapped and I assisted hatch, and they're still in that zone where they may or may not make it.

Pictures!

Mitzi, did you say BLUE?!

oh, sorry to here that i love my polish they are awesome. i would like to have one or two of each color i'm getting close but if i get more my husband will think im crazy.

sorry for everyone else losses too.

I feel like I am missing a golden opportunity:(
I emailed a lady on CL in Seminole who is willing to give me Blue Splash Langshan eggs to hatch but my husband is worried about how big they get and I am just starting with Bantam breeds. I feel terrible and aren't they a rare breed? Feeling sad

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I live in Midwest city. I have wanted chickens for the past several years. Just picked some up on craigslist a couple of weeks ago. Then got suckered into four more from tractor supply, lol. I'm almost finished building their coop, I'll be applying for my permit tomorrow. Can't wait to have them out of my kitchen, lol.

I know practically nothing about chickens, so any advice is welcome. I don't even know what breed/sex most of my chicks are!

Any other Midwest city folks here?

There are a bunch of us very near you - I live in South East Choctaw.
Welcome to the joys of chickens and to the Okie thread!
I have had chickens for more than 5 years now and I like them more than ever. There were a few moments this Winter that made me wonder about why I have chicken, but not many.

I have blue and black langshans, I contacted a breeder on the Fb page Langshan Breeders USA who shipped me mine as about 12 week olds. If you want birds now that is a great place to check.

They are WAY bigger than I expected. The blue cockerel I have named Goliath. He comes to my 6 year-old's waist. I have a back-up black cockerel that was an "extra" in my order, and 3 black pullets. By summer I will have blue and black chicks for sale. Anxiously awaiting my first egg from them... I know they don't all have the plum bloom but the breeder I got them from said about 60% of her stock ends up with the plum bloom.

Those are FULL GROWN large fowl Ameraucanas behind him!!!!!
Very Neat birds! They are calm birds, aren't they? Seems that most big breads are.

My girls are very calm. While I didn't receive them as pets, they're to the point now where they'll eat out of my hand. They still don't want me to pick them up, but they'll get right up around my feet without a problem. And even though they have the size to easily rule the yard, they've never challenged for dominance in the flock.
