***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I enlarged it and he is gorgeous. Yes, I 'd like to have him, if the offer is still good. I can throw another pen together pretty fast. Has he always been healthy since you've had him. I usually quarantine in a stall in the barn. It's kinda of lonely chicken wise, but I could put him in a cage in the house if that would be better. If you think he's pretty healthy and you've already quarantined him once, should I eveen do it again?

Is the different colored skin what u were talking about? They are so cute and fuzzy. I've never seen any quite like these. They are exquisite.

Yes, Fm, is the gene that causes the dark skin. Silkies have Fm most NN don't, I think showgirls generally do too. (from the silkie) So if you start w/ both parents having Fm the chances of getting only that in the offspring is much greater.

They are so cute do you take pics professionaly they are always so breathtaking

Thank you. No I don't I just love nature photography. I have sold one of my pics though as art, that was awesome to me. It wasn't even one of my nature shots, it was a pic of ice on an old bed spring of all things.

LOL do you REALLY want to know???

Got everything sorted and counted and started in the incubator today. Hubby went a little overboard on the bidding but we did have a completely empty sportsman to fill... only two eggs had slight cracks and I sealed them with beeswax so we'll see how they do.

6 standard cornish + 3 wheaten marans (from )
12 Jubilee Orp (will probably keep most of these for a 2nd bloodline)
12 Rhodebar
12 Gold-laced Orp (some of these were marked GLW I'm hoping they were mismarked...but may end up being Wyandottes instead of Orps)
12 Blue/Black Orp
18 BLR Wyandotte
6 Gold-laced Wyandotte
18 Exhibition quality RIR
12 Deep Keel exhibition quality Rouen ducks
7 paint silkie
1 partridge silkie
2 porcelain/buff/blue silkie (not sure what that marking means exactly, I guess a mixed pen)
12 spangled OEGB
14 white silkie
12 black silkie
12 blue silkie
7 blue/black cochin
10 black cochin
6 SFH (will be keeping these for sure)
6 Russian Orloff (will be keeping these for 2nd bloodline I have another set of hatching eggs due to arrive Monday)
12 RIR X Cochin frizzle
18 RIR crosses (I forget the exact mix- almost ate these but hubby insisted they go in the bator...)

Like I said no counting until I do the first candling, right?!?! Haha or not. Totally filled the one sportsman and had 20 eggs left that I slipped into the almost full sportsman... SO if you want any of these chicks they will mostly be fore sale in 3 weeks LOL!!!
Ooooo! I might be interested in some silkies!!! Keep us posted when they hatch and I will see if your selling any!

Chicken math has got the best of me. I now have 50 chicks in brooders and 34 eggs in the incubator. I have been building coops/pens like crazy...

LOL! Welcome to my world!

Oh it is SO nice to be back! With hubbies leg making things busier, then my kids sucking the life out of our internet making me wait until the coming billing cycle so I can get it where it doesn't take a millennium to load a page, I am back on!!! My husband is doing ok. We go tomorrow to see the Dr. and see if everything is going as planned with the swelling going down. He just had some antibiotics as well in the hospital for a couple of days just to get some infection taken care of. I told him it was dirty foot syndrome ha! So any way the doc will let him know if we are going to go ahead with surgery on Wed. He really broke a few bones as well as smash some. Looks like it is a very strong possibility that he may have to change his profession. He's still off work and will be for a few months. But God provides and we are doing ok.

As for chickens I can't say too much. Ok, so I can say quite a bit. I have 25 in the big brooder and then my last batch of eggs hatched making that 25 plus 12 new ones in the tote in the dining room. Cathie Sue, I did the dry hatch and I had 8 of those SFH eggs go into lock down and all 8 hatch out! Most are gray or brown with the yellow but I had two that are more or less yellow. I had those shipped eggs that had the detached air cells. All the SFH ones he gave me (3) never made it. The New Hampshires I had 4 out of 6 make it to lock down and all 4 hatched. One I had to assist because it was so tight in the egg. The air cell was too big I guess and wrapped around the egg. We will be planning on building a bigger coop pretty soon....

Last thing I can tell you all about my chickens is I cleaned my coop out super well. I say that only because we have a Mite infestation. I noticed some feathers looking kinda shabby then my cockerel Thorin had a lot of crusty blood here and there on his comb. I saw Mikayla at the Claremore home and garden and she said she had to dust all the birds there because of mites and that's when the lightbulb came on. As soon as I got home I didn't even look at them, I got my sevens dust and I checked Thorin's bum and saw all the creepy crawlies EVERYWHERE on him!!! UGH!!!! SICK THINGS!!!! So they ALL got dusted. Then DE was thrown in the coop like a crazy dust storm in a desert after I cleaned it all out. Sick nasty little bugs. Ugh! Still makes me itch just thinking about it!

Coming to a close I can only say that my little flock and all my 37 (I still feel quite boggled by that number) chicks are doing good. I integrated the blue Cochin and she is doing pretty good other than my darn cockerel Thorin trying to mount her every five min. She figured out how to run away from him but he is getting to be a butt and I'm not sure what to do with him yet. As soon as the girls get in the coop they are up on roosts and away from him so they all know better. What does everyone do with a cockerel that needs some scolding and needs to just calm the heck down?

Hotcurlr speaking for myself it doesn't matter how much I trust the seller I ALWAYS ALWAYS quarantine. Good habit and can save you heartbreak. Even if they are healthy as a horse at sale the stress of travel and a new environment can weaken their immune system and they can start showing symptoms RIGHT after you combine them with your own precious ones. Then you are up a creek. I do min of 14 days, but I prefer 30 if I can swing the pen space.

A few chick pics from today 8 days old

Wow, this is an incredibly active thread! Which is good, I'm going to learn a lot!

I live in town, so am limited to only eleven chickens and no roosters. Some of you have really impressive flocks!

My chicks are growing like crazy. I figured I'd lose some, but all thirteen are thriving (yes I'm already over my numbers lol). Some are bound to be boys though. I'd love some pro advice when the time comes to turn some into dinner...

Good news, I am nearly finished with my chicken tractor/coop. Chicken wire sucks! Yes, I had already bought chicken wire before reading the recommendation to use hardware cloth. But, it's really to keep the chickens in, not much in the way of predators in my backyard, since I'm chain linked too, to keep the dogs in. The dogs have lost interest in the chicks, thankfully! So all that is left now is to put the roof on and tie off one more section of chicken wire. I'll post pics once I'm able. It's unique, made out of conduit and plywood. Super lightweight so I can handle moving it myself.

Nice to meet you all!

Hi I'm new here and we are NE of OKC, in Arcadia. We picked up some 5 week old chicks yesterday. And the cherry eager had 2 balls of impacted yuck on her rear claws. She fussed a bit, but with warm water I managed to get them off. She still doesn't want to walk. Any suggestions? I am a sucker, but my 5 year old son really wanted her. (Because we don't have enough chicks)
We started with 4 buff orpington last spring for my seven year old daughter. Then were given 2 barred rocks. 3 hens remain. So we decided to expand this spring. We acquired some straight runs (4 more buffs, 4 dark brown speckled sussex, and an appenzeller spitzhauben) still trying to figure out sexes. Thinking we have a bunch of roos. Then I decided I needed more girls, so I ordered 8 pullets due early April. In the interim, we picked up a cherry egger, cuckoo Marian and an americauna. And a duckling. And then an additional cherry egger, 2 production reds, another BO and 2 black australorps yesterday. I think I need a support group (and another duckling or two)
Thanks for any helpful input!
