***OKIES in the BYC III ***

i was looking at it today wondering about that too, rather than btes

Better pics? I can't think of anything that would have a bitespan like that. Can you get a closeup of the marks? If the other dog was after it, it had to be big because a coon or opossum couldn't move that fast. Could be coyote, dog, bobcat or vorpal bunny.

Was vorpal the kind in The Holy Grail?

Kyz, the only one I'm sure is a girl is the one the dog got ahold of. The 1st and 3rd are def. Boys, I'd have guessed boy on the 4th also but I see everyone else thought girl.
Teenaged roosters need knocked on the head by the hens. Out of my *6 Serama boys only 2 get to have a hen-and one of those is blind! The other one is my 3 yr old, Channing. Young boys are rude little creatures lol

On the pair of Serama's I got, the boy is being a perfect gentleman to the tiny little hen. Only once have i seen him try to breed her and she didn't want him to so he stopped. He calls to her when they get feed or a treat. So they must have been mated together at June's or he is just a special young man. The other two boys are just a crowing and adjusting ,one doesn't raise a stink when I hold him, where as one doesn't like it much, in fact I opened the cage door and he flew out and had to chase him in the house...lol. Got him and just held him and loved on him, so he may take a little more time to be social. But just love the little birdies.

Almost forgot, the baby Serama's with pasty butt, got them all cleaned up again last night and put vaseline on their butt so poop will not stick, they seem to be doing better so hopefully if will clear up. Thanks everyone for all the great advise. That is what I like about this thread is that everyone is here to answer questions and help each other through the good and the bad and the happy and the sad...

Newbie here! I live in Midwest City and if all goes according to plan (and code) I'll be getting my first chickens soon!!! We are in it for the eggs. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good breed for the central Oklahoma climate?

Thanks!

I'm in Midwest city too! I just put in my permit application a couple of days ago. I've already got my five week old chicks in the coop. No idea when the inspection is. Hopefully it all goes smoothly.

@spacielang if you're in it for the eggs, you can't beat one of the breeds bred for egglaying. The auto-sexing pullets from Tractor Supply or Atwoods are egglaying machines. Red or gold sexlinks or Golden comets are bred for egglaying. If you're looking for a standard breed the Rhode Island Red or Longhorn are known for laying, and I picked up a couple of Minorcas because they're supposed to be good layers.

My best layer is a red sexlink from TSC. She has a great personality, too. The only downside is they have reduced lifespans because so much of their energy goes into laying.
