***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Lost dragon this morning, she was full grown when I got her 5 years ago, so must have been at least 6, since she had been broody before i got her- RIP sweetheart

Sorry to hear Robin. You've had a bad run lately.

Hey all! I have a quick question. I have a 5 mo old pullet that has been acting sickly the last couple of days. She is inactive, barely will scratch. Sits there with her head tucked to her back. Reminds me a bit like Cocci when she had it as a chick. Her crop is empty so I don't think she is eating even though I have food out 24/7. Should I isolate her and treat this as Cocci or should I wait it out and see if she improves?
Not sure what to treat, but I would certainly get her out of there. Try at the least some special treatment, at least you will prevent others from picking on her.

never wait- isolate, then start determining what is going on- listen to breathing, check poop etc How is her breathing?? Get her on duramycin or tylan until you figure it out- is her crop doing ok?

Her crop and breathing are fine. She just acts like a slug. She just doesn't act like she feels good and won't eat. She isn't pooping either. That I can see anyway.

I am so sorry to hear about Dragon!

I would treat for Cocci first. For some reason pullets just coming up on 5-6 months old have a susceptible period where I see Cocci occasionally. Keeping her hydrated is a must- syringe it down her throat if necessary. If she won't drink she will die. If you stick a child's medicine syringe halfway down her throat and give her 1/2 tsp at a time you won't aspirate her that way.

x3 on cocci, but also check for mites. I'm not sure what it is about mites... I can have an entire flock totally free of them except for one bird that just can't seem to fight them off for some reason and gets overrun, and no matter what I do, it doesn't work.

Also, at that age, she may be swinging into egg production and could be eggbound. Also, check her back for gouges. If she's at POL the boys could be treating her roughly. If she's not pooping at all, I would definitely consider checking for some kind of impaction.
