***OKIES in the BYC III ***

OMG I missed an awesome day!! Kass, thank you so much for the pictures. I feel so sad missing it. We had family coming to town and then Friday night they transported my Mother-in-law here to the heart hospital in a helicopter from SE Oklahoma, so either way I was destined to miss POOPS. My MIL is going to have heart surgery but it will be a good thing once it's over.

I saw Joe Villamil and his kids in the pics-I miss Joe. And I saw Raphael- Coral, you must be so proud of him, what a wonderful boy. I loved Mary Jo's big smile, she's one of the nicest people I've ever met :) Rinda, I have no idea how you do the birds and the bees and 4 kids and a husband. I'm always humbled by people like you.

@artsyrobin that's exactly the trick in stopping aggression-don't let them have girls if they show aggression. It may sound cruel but I don't feel it is. They're calmer, more focused, less uptight and you get to see their real personalities if they're not all hyped up with hormones. The boys in my bachelor yards are darling creatures-some of them have been with girls in the past and they turn into angry little ankle biters. So you've hit the nail in the head with the little D'Uccle boy. I think he's going to bond really close to you and become one of your favorites.

We've went on a mouse killing spree. If I'd have know it would be this effective this fast I'd have done it a long time ago. We got those Uncle Tom (I think) mouse poison holders and put some in every pen, plus I hang the feeders up high every night. I was worried about the birds possibly eating the dead mice but they show no interest, plus I picked the dead ones up several times a day. I read about the poison and it's weight related. So a single chicken would have to eat like 50 mice for it to make them sick. You can sneak out there at night with a flashlight and there's not a single mouse in sight! Not one. I feel so much better, seriously.
Robin, mice can also carry mange that chicken can get, ivomec would've taken care of that, too.

I've been working on the coolest little Outhouse coops for some 25 sf pens for the blind Silkie pair, grow-outs for chicks and mama hens raising babies. It's been slow going with all the distractions recently. I'll get pictures when they're done.

@artsyrobin I LOVE these 2 Lav Silkie boys! What sweet gentle little boys!! I took my 1/2 blind Silkie boy away from them because I caught him picking on the bigger Lav Silkie, I've been watching close. I don't feel so sorry for the White one getting beat up by everyone else now-not if he's going to be mean to the Lav boy. The 2 darling little boys from you will just continue living with each other. The White Silkie will have to fend for himself elsewhere.

Love all the pictures from POOPS! It looks like it was a blast. I will be there next year. No matter where! (My baby won't be so dependent on me then)
@ksane I hope all is well with your MIL. That's scary stuff and I hope the recovery is smooth.
@lonnyandrinda do you sell your honey anywhere near the OKC area? Are you on the coop?
@greenbeetle I know someone in Yukon with LF splash blue and black cochin. Not sure if she has brown but I got one from her that looks like a peregrine falcon. Probably not a show color but I love it. Anyway, it's kindof a drive for you but let me know if you want contact info and I'll try to find it!
And that d'uccle rooster is BEAUTIFUL!

Rafael has a question regarding ordinances in the city of Muskogee. I can't get any of the city pages to load today, so I'm hoping someone out there can answer my question. Can Rafa raise hens within the city limits of Muskogee, OK?

Rafa won some lovely Swedish Flower Hen eggs (Thanks, CathieSue!!!!) that I plan to set for him this week. If it's legal, what are the restrictions regarding coop size? Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Dusti I was surprised the buns took straight to eating forage.

I had no pellets and no idea I was bringing home buns, so far they've had grass, lambs quarters, comfrey, lemon basil, raspberry leaves, and sunflower leaves, and some yard weeds they picked out.

@Ksane

well, you could put him in a little section by himself with a hen??

went out to the coop lastnite and surprised one of those wood rats! DANG!

gonna put bait out... maybe wire it under the coop?

latest pic of my mystery chick, polish EE maybe?

I wouldn't use poison around the chickens. They could eat the rodents after they've died.

I put snake poop around the corners of my garage, coop, yard and along the fences.
Lots of people use sticky traps, then kill the rodent some other way.
There are live traps, but I had a terrible experience with them. (The ones that are solid black plastic)

is your food bin rodent safe? Do you keep food out at night? Best way to keep rodents out is to reduce their food supply, which may or may not be possible considering they eat grass seeds in hay!
