***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hey Mitzi, what do you get with SFH x Blue EE?

Turns out SFH x Blue EE = D'aaawwwww!

400

You get a really cool looking chick evidently :-D

Hotcurltr...glad to see you posting...was wondering how your were doing. Hope the leg is healing up now. Sounds like you have your birds on a very healthy diet!
I thought so, but they just don't seem very fat. The little ones grow like weeds though. I will try to get pic of how big your kids got. Boys started acting like roos tonight, so I guess they get locked up until I get them rehomed. What are u doing up in the middle of the night? How do u do all u do and stay up late. Strong genes, Hehe

@hotcurltr I don't have as many birds as lots of people on the board, the difference is mine are pets only. I'm in awe all the time how some of the manage to keep up (thinking of you @NanaKat ) I don't have gardens and cattle and canning, I just have the birds and dogs. Anyway, Super Women I am NOT and some days it's a struggle all day to get them taken care of.
Dan, I can't imagine what on earth could be killing them....maybe some sort of bacteria or parasite that not all are susceptible to. Feel their breast bone and see if they have nice padding there. 5-6 month old birds should have a thick layer of padding. Best thing for worming is Safeguard horse paste. Everyone always says to give them a pea-sized drop but i give an inch long ribbon of it for my standard sized breeds and the pea sized drop goes to little Bantams. Be sure to repeat in 10 days. The wormer can't kill the eggs, just the adults. So you have to go back a 2nd (and even a 3rd for good measure) to kill the worms that hatch out of the eggs still in their system.
Actually u r a super woman in another way. Look at how audacious you are. Operating on a crop, and I know there r other things I've read on here. Just have a brain fog right now. I was referring, however, about how you feed what, 200 birds with less bags of feed than I do. Mine do waste a lot and r getting picky, so I'm going to have to do something different. I can't afford the waste. If you don't mind , I'd like to know how you feed. I get bad anxiety if I think any of my animals aren't getting what they need and sometimes overdo it. I have an old dump of a place and a redneck coop.but it is getting the siding from the shed so will look better when I paint it. The other coop is an old root cellar I filled in w/ dirt . I use under the porch for 3 different houses. Used an old pickup topper and panels covering in wire to make an enclosed brooder house. and built Floyd's coop with plywood, sheet metal and old shelving for nests. Actually, It's very cozy. But I do keep it clean, have electricity in them for fans or lights or whatever else I need. I don't believe in heaters in the winter. It makes for sick birds that won't thrive well in other conditions. IMO See, what I mean,

all I wanted to say is they will have good food before I do. I never realized I could love them so much.

@hotcurtlr
Thank you for that info. Unfortunately, all three died on Sunday.
@YardBirdMom
Thank you. It's no fun losing ones that seemed to be thriving.
@lonnyanddrinda
Yes, we were starting to free range them, but after completing the work on the two newest coops, and changing their living quarters, I have been keeping them cooped, due to wanting them to know this is their new home. The Polish was out, a bit, the day before, as she was always the easiest to deal with. And she was very sweet to the littler ones. I have two, nearly fully feathered pullets, that I am starting to bring out of the grow out pen, and put them in a portable run, and Phyllis, would go in with them, as she typically would just go hang out next to their run, anyway.
On acting different, the best thing I can say to describe it, is that, she was "clingy". She always wanted to be around us, but wanted to even more so. Maybe somewhat more lethargic, but not greatly so. She just wanted to be held, and wanted to be social. Her best coop ate, was the black frizzle. I'm going out there in a bit, to see how she's doing. We got them together, and they loved hanging out together. But, the frizzle, would make us chase her, to go back in the coop, where Phyllis would just hang out by our feet, and walk in completely voluntary.
They will pick up birds that died on Sunday on Monday, if it's w/i 24 hrs. I had a Light Brahma rooster(my favorite rooster ever) named Fowler. When hubby and i were building the brood house(grow outPen), he wouldn't leave us. He didn't take his girls out to free range and was just undefoot wanting to be held and loved. He was trying to tell us he had something wrong, and being so new to chickens I didn't understand. He went into the cellar after a while so I went to see what was going on. He had passed on. It was a Saturday, so I did the necropsy myself to see if I could figure it out. I don't know what you would call this, but his gizzard was split wide open, and his crop overflowing full. His intestines were empty. I dug into the gizzard and found a small piece of sharp metal, which I concluded caused it. I felt so bad. I should of paid more attention and stopped to realize his behavior wasn't normal. He was asking me to help him. He knew he was dying and wanted help and loving, neither of which I gave him at the time, so he died all alone in the coop after I quit picking him up and told him he was being a pest. Now I am crying. Have to quit on this. Even the wild flighty ones trust us and need us though they don't show it.

Ive never seen the horizontal. Id love to see a pic of your system. I haven't had a problem with the vertical leaking tho. We let them leak the first few days so the chickens figure out what they're for, then we seal them with pipe glue.
x2 I'd love to see a lot of your systems. I've been thinking of going to nipples because of the geese and ducks, keeping the water dirty a few minutes after I change it.

Hey Mitzi, what do you get with SFH x Blue EE?

Turns out SFH x Blue EE = D'aaawwwww!

Look at those wide open eyes , What a cutie. You know I love my purebreds, but I love the hybrids. Sometimes we really get something unique.

Speaking of... when are we going to see pics of those blue babies you got at POOPS?

Oh, and I'm just going to toss this out there... I agree with @hotcurltr, you're Superwoman, even if you don't realize it.
