***OKIES in the BYC III ***

That's horrible!!! Poor guy, hope you are able to get them out.

Ouch! Poor puppy! Have never seen a porcupine in the wild. Didn't know Oklahoma had them here. Hope you get those nasty quills out and your dog feels better!

jcatblum I hate to tell you this, but after 40 plus years of having hunting dogs. I have found that they seem to get more into the porkys instead of learning not too. I dont know if it is an anger issue, or dogs are just not smart anuff to keep off of them. But I have never seen one quit them on his own, and the sad thing about useing e collar etc. The damage is already done when you notice what is going on. But on the bright side, he dont look too bad. I have had dogs look like santa clause they had so many quills in their face and mouth.

That's a brave dog to go up against a porcupine. Do the barbs break, or do they come out with the rest of the quill when you pull them?

Conner and Vesta discovered a big bull snake near one of the pens. They did an excellent job of defending the flock. I wish I could understanding barking. What's the difference between "Snake! Snake!" and "Squirrel! Squirrel!" ?

That's the color of our grass too. We ended up brushhogging/mowing around all buildings/structures this week to reduce fire danger.
What do you use for roofs on your coops...is that sheet metal?

Yes it is metal did have roll roofing but the hail storm beat most of it off ...I plantd alot of tree's but it take's along time to make shade .

Quills are out. His mouth is bleeding pretty good on the inside, couldnt get him to drink water, but he ate a handful of dog treats. Thankful for the leftover pain Meds I still had. Took me and my DD sitting on him while the younger one tried to comfort him
He is about 6 or 7 month old Anatolian mix, none of the other 3 dogs had any signs of porcupine quills. They usually all stay pretty close together. Guess I know who the lead dog is I may have to spend a night porcupine hunting. googled & said they usually stay within 25-30 acres of their home. Maybe he lives in our woods outback.

This is the same dog that goes after all the snakes. Had a snake tangled up in some bird netting in the woods a few weeks ago & he is still barking & going to attack the bird netting each time we walk by. Maybe he is turning into a good guard dog, but I can't be spending an hour picking out quills every day!

When the quills come out I only get the straight part, think they have a little tiny hook on the ends of them that stay inside once you pull the quill

Is that a carin terrier pollo? We used to have 2. One was into attacking anything that moved. The other was into laying on the couch!

Yes. Conner is a cairn terrier. He has a summer hair cut, so his body looks too small. I have not finished clipping his head. He goes after rabbits, mice, squirrels, snakes, donkeys, cows, cats, chickens, guineas, and turtles. I'm sure I've left out other monsters he defends us from. He's a wonderful companion.
