***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Finally got my new computer today. The hard drive was going out, but fortunately got it into the shop in time to recover everything, I think. Have been without since early Monday morning, so I have a lot to catch up with in addition to learning how to use this new computer (I couldn't even see how to turn it on!) and getting familiar with Windows 7.

Looks like I may be able to communicate correctly now! I've surely missed everyone--a bit lost without the computer!

Hello everyone I haven't been on here in a while. went out last night to close up my coops and noticed on of my young hen was moving her head around like she was having a seizer wondering what it is ?????

Been gone a few days and man this thread goes fast!! I did my best to read all the back posts, but there were far too many to respond individually so, I'm going to do it this way:

To all those with losses I am truly sorry - it cannot be said enough that losing any pet just plain sucks *Hugs*

To all those with cute pic's of bunnies and chickens; awwweeeee, I love to see the different varieties and colors and stories behind them! :D

@Ksane - OH My those girls are getting very big!!! I'll have to take some current ones of their sisters and compare. I was gone for 3 days and came home to them looking 1/3 bigger than when I left!

A few of the Light Brahmas girls I got from @YardBirdMom , they're very sweet!

And the Brabanter hen I got from Coral many moons ago. She molts like 3 times a year, what's up with that? lol One of my Bantam Cornish does the same thing. They're both healthy, they just seem to always be mid-molt.

And NOW for my update: My family and I took a short vacation and floated the Illinois river this week. We arrived home last night and I went to do my chores and check on my livestock and my chickens. Well, look what I discovered:

My very first eggs!!!! AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!

I was SOOOO surprised and didn't expect them to lay until next week at the earliest, but alas I have two girls laying! I got another one today that matches the 2nd egg. The first one is super smooth, the other is kind of whitish on the outside, more so then the 1st. ?? Anyway, I'm about to go check and see if more laid and then let them out.

Are they considered a hen once they lay?? I'm SO excited

lol! Congrats!!!
My 1st hens I raised were 4 Cochin girls living together. They all laid their 1st egg the very same day! I think they were competing :)
They're pullets until they're a year old, then they're hens.
These Brahmas girls are wonderful. They live with a group 1/2 their size and they're very sweet to the smaller ones.

I don't usually grow sprouts in the growing season for the chickens, figure they can pick their own grass and weeds. But I just got some meat rabbits and so I've been trying to figure a way to grow just a few sprouts for them, that lead me to the old sock idea. I do not have a video, but here are a few pics of what I've been doing for them. These came up out of order, I have been putting 1/3 cup of dry seed in the sock each day, and b/c of the seed I am using (mistake my hubby got when sent for something else) only soaking 12 hours instead of my usual 24 hours This is day 4 sprout, I'm taking it out to feed the buns. They approve! B/c I'm to lazy to pick seeds off, and the rabbits would chew the socks up, the chicks and broody moms get a windfall. The socks stay in a to go container after the initial soak, O for odd day E for even day, so I don't get confused when turning the container Days 1, 2, and 3 snuggly fit inside.
Im confused what kind of seeds are they?

@Kassaundra why a sock? We use a bucket, but I dont think it will work well in the winter because its not warm enough, so am looking for other ideas.

First eggs!!! What fun! You must be a proud chicken mama.

Im going to be going towards the Tulsa area from Norman next weekend, anyone need to get anything up there? @Kyzmette still want those elderberry plants? Maybe we can figure out how to get them to you.

The last few weeks' labor- rebuilding the playset we bought on Craiglist last fall and a start on redoing the playhouse I got on a chicken FB page. I was going to turn it into a coop but we found a better coop so it gets to stay a playhouse! My girls especially are thrilled.

My usual sprouting is done w/ oats and wheat, but this one is a fodder mix for planting deer plot. I sent Gary to the feed store for something else and he came home w/ this, so I am using it up. It is a mixture of grains, coles, clover etc...

Sprouting in sacks is much easier, the sack keeps the seed moist and applies pressure like in the ground and the sprout much easier, w/o the constant rinsing. I used socks b/c I am only sprouting for 2 rabbits and my sprouting bags I use for the chickens in the winter are the size of pillow cases.
