Yes lot's of peep that have show bird's feed oat's this time of yr wen bird's get ther new feather's an go threw the molt the feather's come in alot stronger an nice'er an it do's keep thim cool some chicken's it take's a wile to get thim eating the oat's...I have let thim set an soak for sevrel days an the bird's like thim better ...

ok, thanks! they are so miserable- and the scratch i give for treats has corn...

This is opion only i dont think birds can drink enough water in this heat to supply enough moisture their body needs. I have nine five gallon buckets i put half full whole oats then fill with water ,I let set two or three days before feeding it .Like michael said it takes a while to get them eating them but when they do they love them. I think it helps grow broader and better feathers . bad side is if you have close neighbor they wont like the smell..Agin this is only opion

Hi I was wanting to know if chickens can die of heat stroke??? I found one of my favorite red hens laying in the middle of the chicken house this morning she has always been a fat healthy happy chicken it looked like she just fell from the roost and died, Then today Henny one of my other red hens was sitting in a bowl of water and wouldnt get out until i moved her, I just worry about them all the time maybe i just spoil them all to much some people do think that but i dont care i just wondered if anyone else has ever had this problem???

In this kind of heat chickens will die .. sorry to put it that way but thats just how it is.. we can only do all we can do to make them cooler but some just cant stand the heat for one reason or another.. older birds and babies are the most likey to die from the heat although any of them can.. i have fans in the coop and misters in the run going during the heat of the day. so far i havent lost any but it could happen any day until this heatwave breaks..i keep a big ag fan blowing at the roost so maybe they can at least get a little air in the night..im sorry about your loss.. but like an old fellow once told me years ago that had raised chickens for over 50 years that ..If you raise chickens they will die and sometimes for no reason ..i have always remembered that .so i feel if i have done all i can do to then the rest is up to the chicken to live or die.... oh i guess im just rambling but thats just the law of nature.. i know lots get really attached to the animals and im the same about my dogs and my mules and horses. i hate to lose any of them but at some point it happens .. i guess for chickens i dont get as attached as alot do although i give them everything they need to survive.as im sure everyone does. so all in all i guess im a big softie when it comes to animals .. the way i look at it is if you cant afford to give they all they need then you dont need them.. i know that everyone on here takes the very best care of their birds. and thats the best anyone can do...sorry i rambled so long ...

Wondering if anyone is still around or is the heat draining everyone so they go to bed early.. I am stuck in the house for probably most of the summer and into fall with this leg in a brace unable to do anything but sit..wearing a big foam brace strapped all the way down my leg is not fun at all..dr says i will have it on for at least three months and cannot bend it at all..oh well its just part of it i guess and also lets me know im not as young as i used to be.. i was trying to dr a young mule and got jerked backwards and somehow tore my quad muscle loose from my knee.. so im here for the summer with all you folks to keep me company.. hope everyone had a great weekend and didnt get to hot..

lol sixshooter you dont ramble as much as I do lol and thank you for the welcome wagon I have been on byc many many many times i just read though and dont say much, thats a GREAT idea though about the fan i never thought of that, people think im crazy because i have a radio in my chicken house going 24/7 but i was told from my very old uncle that it would keep the snakes and any other predator away and it has worked for 4 years now, knock on wood!! i havent had a problem with anything but maybe a black snake every few yrs, and i keep a strand of blue christmas lights on at night in there just so i can see in there from the house, i do have a hurt duck in a cage in the house, he was attacked by a dog a few days ago, so far so good i keep putting neosporin on him and letting him go for a swim once a day, see i told you i ramble on and on too so tooshay to you!! lol or how ever u spell it!!

I haven't lost any chickens since my big orpington roo 3 weeks ago, I'm not using misters or anything just making sure they have water. My pens are covered with sheet metal so they are constantly in shade. I also have no wind blocks near so they get plenty of wind, I do get worried about them but adding much more to my setup would mean running more water lines which isn't feasable at this time. I do check them several times a day. wish this heat would end i'm not getting any eggs at all but all my hens have been broody and trying to sit on the group of same eggs which are a few weeks old.
