***OKIES in the BYC III ***

No rain yet. We have lots of lightning and thunder. The outside temperature dropped from over 100 to just under 90. Ten more degrees and the birds will be able to roost touching shoulders again. I've noticed the bigger hens want more space on the roost when it's hot.

I've been spraying the pens a few times each day. While feeding everyone this morning I noticed the teens weren't milling around. They were standing, facing their house, like little chicken statues. I pulled their house away from the barn wall and found this stinkeroo. The concrete was still damp from the previous spraying, so he must have come in out of the pasture to cool off.

Hesitate to mention this. . . but unless you have to worry about varmits getting the birds, there is a pretty good chance they would have found their way back to the roost on their own this evening.

I wondered if they would return on their own, but was afraid to wait and see. The last time one escaped, about a year ago, she never came back. That was one of my Minorcas who was my favorite bird. I'm not worried as much about varmints as I am the neighbors getting a hold of them and having them for dinner. Guess I'm just over protective, maybe?

When I want to catch a wayward bird, I scatter a little scratch at my feet and either pick it up or use a foot hook ( a wire shepherd's hook made from a fence stay).

This is changing the subject just went out to put everybody up for the night saw the tail of a black snake go into the stuff thats stored in the old house/chicken house which means there is at least two. Hope they don't get in the pen with the silkie that has 5 new babies. My snake hunter friend and I will search for them tomorrow. I find she relocates them or kills them depending on how bad they've been.

Also looks like no rain here.

Gosh. Since I took the photo and knew I was looking down behind the little chicken house, the point of view didn't seem odd to me. Now that you mention it, he does seem to be on the ceiling. He is actually on the ground, but his body is pressed up against the barn wall.

Ok ya'll know just how easily I'm side tracked as I was originally going to post about Monty's downsizing question.

After buying chicks at Blanchard and having two trays left to hatch in the sportsman plus five broodies setting nests I would say no, not at this time.

I will raise up these chicks and see what we can take to the show at Shawnee in Dec. After culling for sex, we keep the hens and then deciding on what else to keep we should actually be up in numbers this year.

We are getting a lot of what looks to be very good quality blue Asils out of the breeding pen.

We are sticking it out. I started to unload 50 or so but think I would be more like giving them away. Same with goats.

We are digging in for the duration of the war.

Buster,
You need to do something with some Goats? How many you got, How big? what breed?
