***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have a little girl who desperately needs help. She started out with a sinus infection when the rains first started. Another girl got swollen eyes and a snotty nose at the same time, and I treated them both with Tylan and the other pullet got over it. This girl had it bad in both eyes, and the other eye is healing, but this eye just keeps getting worse and worse. I came home from work yesterday and it had ballooned to this condition and I'm at the end of my rope on what to do for her. I pulled out the neosporin spray to combat external infection, but how do I get this swelling under control?!?!

Does her eye have any white cheesy accumulation in it?
It usually will collect behind the second set of eyelids and if not removed, will attach to the surface of the eye and she will lose the eye.
Oxytetracycline HCI will help clear up early cases of the sinus infection. I posted the package the other day. I use 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days.

As a last resort, I have used a syringe and dribbled a drop of Oxine full strength directly into the affected eyes and over the nares. It is not painful. While the bird may still lose the eye, this helps rid the eye of bacteria, virus. The eye will dry out and the lids seal together. .

I have begun collecting seed pods for the Carnation poppies. As the pods dry, little windows open up and the seeds scatter thru the windows as the plant moves with the breeze.
These are the pods and if someone is artistic and can think of a use for them...I can cut the stems longer. Right now I cut them about 2 -6 inches

No cheesy exudates I can see, just painful red swelling. She had some yellowish pus early on, then some clear tears, and now there's no secretions. I have Duramycin, which is tetracycline hydrochloride, and I just started her on it. Do you think it might work? I'll try the oxine, because at this point the swelling could kill her, so we've reached a do-or-die state. Thanks for the input.

How are all our OKIES? There are a few who haven't been on in a great while,.... some a short while...hope everyone is catching up on all the projects put off by the rainy month of May.
We still want to know how ya'll are doing and see photos....besides the friendly banter, this thread is nothing without pictures.

So here is Miranda with her 24 adopted chicks out teaching them the acts of life...

and dust bathing.

Cool pic

Have a tomato question for you (or anyone else for that matter) my tomatoes are taller then me, and now getting taller then the support, should I prune the growth taller then the support or add height to the support. If I trim will I lose tomatoes or will they just add tomatoes to the lower sections?

Hi all,

I've been treating the younger bunch with corrid. Just in case it wasn't the mulberries in their poo. No symptoms, but it can't hurt.

I was wondering how everyone feels about worming chickens. Do it periodically, only with symptoms, etc.

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has any wisdom regarding Lucky, the barred pullet in the picture. She (please confirm sex) is almost half the size of the others her age (around 11 weeks). She eats, drinks, runs around with her crew. She is not as fast as they are at full speed.

Do I need to worry about her, or is she just a runt? Could it be a hatchery problem? I got her at Atwoods when they had full rebates on assorted heavies. I have only one male or of the four from there. Pretty good odds.
