***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I'mw new to this but the black & brown coloring, it looks similar to our Delawares, though ours are more speckled pattern.
Other than roosters laying far fewer eggs than hens... why do you feel you "can't" keep him in Tulsa?

I think I may have a failure to thrive situation. I bought 3 chicks a few weeks ago and they were about the same size. I have been feeding them good quality feed and put vitamins in their water a couple times a week. 2 of the chicks have doubled in size but one hasn't grown much at all. At first I thought maybe they were different sizes maybe this one is younger but this morning I found it laying in the shavings spread out with shavings on it like it was trampled. I picked it up and it is alive but very weak. I have it by itself now with corid and vitamins in its water but things aren't looking good. Does this sound like failure to thrive? It has always eaten well and I thought it was funny as much as it ate it was so small

Probably. Either failure to thrive or something is wrong with it internally. :( Sorry.

try feeding it some raw egg yolk- vitamins and corid don't mix them- the vitamins will nullify the corid-

do you remember the two cochins i got from you? well snowflake is nearly standard size now, and mini me is still small, just a little smaller than my bantam cochins- sometimes a smaller one happens

@DustyDave he's gotten aggressive with me. He doesn't do it to my husband but he circles me and starts charging me. He is a good rooster, protects his hens and waits for them to be in the coop before he goes in there but he just hates me. I can't go in there without looking over my shoulder and I'm the one that does them 90% of the time so that doesn't work for me. And we have 8 chickens and we are only allowed 6 so this way, we will at the number we are allowed to have. The other rooster is fine, a little skittish. He doesn't crow yet, probably because he's being submissive.

I understand and this definitely answers the question; which is why one should probably start with several cockerels in the beginning. Don't forget though you can have chicks in addition to the 6, you could be raising for meat also.

Blackbriars: they are so cute!

@DustyDave : I know. I don't think I could bring myself to eat him but you can if you want lol. We don't really want to raise chicks and stuff, just have hens for eggs and then when they get older, get new hens. We bought all 8 together knowing a few would probably turn out to be roos. If you want them, let me know.

It has been a busy few weeks.
We canned 36 quarts of peaches and have been weeding the garden beds....One last asparagus bed to weed and another bed of potatoes to dig. We had some bushes and fruit trees drown from the May rains. We have been trimming back and pulling those.

I have hatches coming off every 4 to 6 days apart.
Hatching chicks tonight...three out and 6 are pipped so far. The due day is actually Sunday.
Three hens in the Columbian Wyandotte pen are sharing a nest with 9 eggs between them. So far they have hatched four today. They will get the chicks that hatch in the incubator.

One of the Delaware Bantams has hatched four chicks. She is doing a great job as a mom.
Four more Bantam hens are sitting on eggs.

I gave 20 chicks to a Black Wyandotte hen who has been broody for three weeks. I had her in a wall cage with ceramic eggs for three days. She didn't break broody so she got the incubator chicks from the last hatch.

The next hatch will be July 1. Those chicks will go to the Buckeye hens to raise.

Another hen has decided to go broody. There is another hatch scheduled for July 5. Looks like she will soon have chicks too.
