***OKIES in the BYC III ***

We will make the chickens a big pan of cornbread with the old cornflour. Mikaela asked if we could add the dried peas that don't have a date anywhere on the package. I think the chickens will enjoy corn-pea bread

I did the same fridge cleaning thing mine got old soup mixed w/ all Gary's dry crusty breads and bread like products.

We had a pretty snow this morning, but the grounds are really wet. Feeding the cows was a bit dicey even with 4 wheel drive on the feed truck. The boys put out extra hay for the herd since the bales were covered with snow.
I had filled all the coops yesterday with extra dry hay and cleaned out the brooder room adding PDZ to the shavings on the floor and added a new layer of clean shavings. Every feathered baby was toasty in there today.

The huge flakes began falling about 7:30 am and the dogs had fun running in the yard, but had a coating of the flakes to be brushed off as we went back inside.

The snow stopped about 10 am and the side yard had some protections from the snow blowing from the north. The back yard got the full 2 to 3 inch accumulation

The snow dressed the bare trees and obscurred the visions beyond.

When it was snowing there was not a chicken in sight, but the sparrows and starlings would fly up from the pens where they hoped to get some protection and a little feed.

We enjoyed the winter wonder land from inside. We are waiting a control panel for the C H &A unit, but have backup heaters so we are comfy.

thanks so much for all the pics NaNa. the snow was beautiful but sounds like it was treacherous. I miss the Okla. snows. we just don't have much here. Are you having any calves born during this badc spell?

PoCo I don't think that buggy will hold much else .lol Love the pic of the pigs. How are you likeing the guniea hogs? How big are your grown ones? Talked to my daughtger in Kansas,Okla. she said the snow didn't stick there but it sure turned cold. Everyone saty warm, hug a chickie!

@Ironsights - Consider a tank heater; the kind that can be submerged. I saw one that maxed out at 160 degrees Fahrenheit, which works because you want the water to be between 148 and 155, and the water cools with each bird. The downside is speed: the water won't heat quickly. I have an enormous stock pot that I put over a camping burner. It works, but I have to watch the temperature closely, and adding cold water to tweak the temperature down just a bit is time consuming.

@mjgigax - Are you making a journey of chickeny goodness to Coweta next Friday? I'm planning to get there around five. It would be nice to visit : )

We got most of the birds fed and watered while it snowed, but then the snow turned into rain. My all-terrain stroller couldn't maneuver in the slushy mud, so I had to transfer the youngest grand baby to a body sling and cover us with an XXL rain slicker. The girls followed at a discrete distance, sharing an umbrella. The piggies broke open the pomegranates but left them for the chickens when they saw the other goodies: banana peels, toast, rice, and apple cores. Finally, everyone's fed, and the kids are napping, so I feel like the day hasn't been totally swallowed up by the weather.

@artsyrobin - Stripes really enjoyed the pomegranates, but he wasn't a fan of the snow and rain.

Yes! We are coming to Cowetta, have been looking forward to it all week!

I get more eggs every time there is snow or ice. Either my chickens are weird or they do so from staying in the coop longer in the morning. I dunno

I enjoy this breed. The AGH is friendly enough to be petted and brushed. I suppose any pig could be if lots of time was spent on socializing, but this breed is relaxed in attitude and does not worry me when I am feeding, cleaning, and watering inside the piggy area. The three adults range between 150 lbs. and 250 lbs. These are guesstimations based on measurements around the girth of each pig. The little ones range from 10 lbs. (runtlet Angel) to 45 lbs. (castrated male). I expect the castrated males (3 this time) will weigh over 250 when they're fully mature.

Awesome!

I'm ready for an evening of chickens and adult company.

@ poco, thanks for the suggestion, I have a tank heater but it's a floater. I could get a submersible and use a branding torch on low to help to keep it hot. I think I can work it out.

When I saw the picture of the chickens and the pigs, the pig butts look like a big black cartoon chicken foot. LOL.
