You can do that all year long and freeze in a little water in baggies and bring out during the hot days as cold treats. Or you can thaw and partially cook, add a little oatmeal and serve as a warm treat in winter.
Hulls from beans and peas or cores from cabbage, lettuce cand be chopped or ground and treated the same way.
It is pretty early in the game to be worried about the cockerels place in the pecking order. When he is mature and interested in the girls he will reassert himself. There may e a few scuffles but unless he is a small breed he should be ab le to stand up for himself.
I wanted to share an update image of my hatchling! This is the Speckled Sussex roo x Production Red hen baby, hatched June 1, and she hatched with Spraddle Leg. She's a pretty big chicken for being 4 months old, and is already larger than the adult australorp I've got. I love all of her reds and the pencil looking markings on her spine. Her mom has a white feather base while she's got the smoky, ashy black color. She's such a good chicken, too. I can pick her up and she sits on my hand, and talks to me while I talk to her and pet her.
I really love my easter egger rooster but I'm worried the girls won't let him be a rooster? He's two weeks younger than the hatchling and he's at the bottom of the pecking order. How can I fix this? Should I take him out and then reintroduce him once he's older/bigger?
I absolutely love his colors and bearded face but i worry he won't be able to stand up for himself. Any thoughts?
About how old do you think that will be? I've never had a juvenile rooster before, so I'm really new to this LOL My guess is anywhere between 6 - 8 months? It is pretty early in the game to be worried about the cockerels place in the pecking order.
