***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi Sooner - I've only had one bird in the house to reduce heat stress. She received water mixed with pediatric electrolytes and stayed in a carrier in the pantry for a few hours. As soon as she was moving around on her own, I put her back outside with her buddies. That was a few days ago, and she seems fine now.

Hi Joe - Are you going to Centerton Saturday? Will it be cooler in Arkansas than in Tulsa? I have a few birds I need to sell. How far is Centerton from your place?

Morning peeples! Sorry Joe and all the others on loosing your birds. I just can't imagine that kind of temp. They were making abig deal here because it finally hit 100.My neighbor came over last night while I was watering flowers and laughed because I was drenched in sweat from just watering flowers.(he does concrete work!). Haveing to stay in the house is not doing me good. I have the nervous munchies so eat all day and drink tons of tea. Cool weather gets here I'm going to have to go out and really work and sweat it off!lol
Took time this morning to scrub all the chick waters. They green up fast in the heat. I got some dog food for the ducks but they would rather eat the chick starter I feed! And its medicated! I wet it down and then the chickens really went after it. Guess it won't hurt them. Its cheaper than their feed anyway.

We have clouds this morning,no rain yet but keeping the sun back anyway.

Nice to see so many old friends comming back to check in. Guess the heat has everyone ran inside. Now where is that Teach guy hiding!

Had to post this for some laughs...loved it myself.

Haven't lost any in the past few days. Our high temp was 117.1 so far.

Last evening treated the little cochin roo with mupirocin ointment - 2%. It's a anti infection ointment. He would not keep his eyes open. When I treated the left eye a "kernal" (for lack of a better descriptor) about the size of half a piece of corn slid out. It looked like an oil pocket of some kind. No signs of damage to the eye and no signs of any other ailment. He is fine this morning. ??no idea what that could have been??

As for putting birds inside back outside...I'm going to keep mine inside until the weather breaks and then introduce them outside a few days in a row in the evening hours before putting them back out side for good. Will keep angel and the little roo inside until he is big enough to be outside...that could be a while.

Yes Wayne, we thought the insurance would be a good idea too. Hay is going for $90 a bale now because it is hard to find. There are people trucking it in from other states because local farmers aren't selling their stockpiles since they need it to feed their own livestock. We bought some of last years hay in the spring and that helped to build our hay supply. There won't be any second cuttings this year. We have already begun feeding hay in two pastures. With over 175 head to feed right now, we are keeping an eye on the pastures and will start taking February calves to market soon.

Those looking for hay...check out the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture daily hay report. You can get it online at
http://www.ag.ok.gov/mktdev-newshome.htm
That list is by county and gives contact information.

Hey Wayne,
Be careful with the ducks and chick starter. They will over medicate because they don't really need the medication and they are gluttons and eat everything in site usually.
Glad you guys are not getting the heat like Oklahoma. I would not wish that on anyone. It's funny but I remember some years back when we had an extreme winter followed by an extreme summer. That was back in the early 80s. Maybe we will see some relief soon.

Hi everyone!

Can anyone tell me if there's a poultry sale at Cement this Saturday? If so, when does it start?
