I'm doing good...I had about 100 birds outside at home until last week...they were really hot, but doing O.K. When the weather guys said it was going to get even hotter, I decided enough is enough...no need to wait for them to start dieing....so everybody is keeping cool inside now. Really crowded, but everybody is alive and waiting until cooler weather.

My husband was talking about getting a generator for the barn in case we go several weeks without power this winter. Just to make sure the birds could have some heat. Wonder what it would take for him to think the birds need a/c????

You should be able to find a swamp cooler pretty reasonably that will help the birds out alot, it will take th eexteme temps off, as well as add some humidity and remove some of teh dust.

Mine have had a tent style shelter since 2006 and have seldom gone in during the winter, even when it was snowing or icing. We took 2 sheets of 4x8 one inch plywood and tented them together at the top, then put a 12 inch wide strip of plywood across the bottom on both sides, for added stability. The tops are screwed together and the bracing pieces of plywood are screwed to the sheets of plywood. Sometimes the peacocks sit on the top of the "tent" but since it is securely braced at the bottom, that doesn't cause any problems for the structure.

We have some newer peacocks this year in different pens and those have 55 gallon barrels laid on their side and braced with a cinderblock so they don't roll. I fully expect those peacocks to be sitting on their perches, 5 feet off the ground, when it is snowing.

We do put a tarp across the North side of the pens when the wind starts howling, just to act as a windbreak.

What are u treating with the vet x. I have used it before, but has been awhile. Stay cool out there. Guy

Have 6 of my older hens that are doing a little sneezing. No runny eyes or nose crud, but want to stay ahead in this heat. By putting a few drops in the wterers, a little for each one that dips a beak...VetRX has camphor oil in it...smells like Vicks Vaporub.
The little Cochin roo I have in the hot tub room. I used a drop on his nose this morning along with the antibiotic on his eyes. He is still keeping one closed. Being safe with him too.

Be back in a while. going out to wet the covers on the pens.

Afternoon Everybody!!!

It was a productive morning, finally got the kennel finished, with the exception of the roof. Not sure exactly how I am going to do the roof but have a few options. Going to start working on the next kennel tonight when it cools down. Yeah!!!

Really enjoy the chicken math concept, but am afraid no matter what the math I am closely getting over my limit.

Of course that has never stopped me from getting more birds. At the last auction I went to I swore no more chicks this year, then they had a box of 6 salmon favorelles chicks.

So much for no birds in the house.

So who all is planning on going to Cement Saturday? Planning on being there, but will probably take the car because the air conditioner in the truck is not working. Unfortunely this does not limit the number of birds I can get. Have carried full grown peacocks and turkeys in my little car. It is all about the packing.

Saw your post Jcatblum and thought I would throw in my two cents. My peafowl mainly go up in the trees at night, unless the weather is bad and then they go into the coop on their own. Matter of fact I know when it is going to be bad weather because my peahen is the first to go in. Piaget was in the trees when we had that really bad ice storm a couple of years ago. She fell out of the trees because so much ice had covered her body.

The only concern I would have for any shelter you are going to build is making it predator proof. Lost two cocks because the started roosting in the neighbor's barn and a band of raccoons got them. Also getting them to go into a shelter could be an issue if they have not been made to do that from a young age. Mine know the boundries of the property and what shelter is available, but it was some thing they just figured out. Peafowl are very smart and if you maybe can catch them and put them up for a few nights they will figure it out. Like I said the main thing is making something that is predator proof.

Well better go fix something to eat, I is hungry!!!

Be safe everyone!

i all, I am at the library, I got off work early today went and had a Burger Basket at Boomerang and come on over to see what all was going on. I see not a lot and its still hot!!!! Lynn

Do what I do.....keep mentioning how a particular chicken seems to really like him & wonder (out loud, of course) why its attached itself to him, be sure to tell him how adorable it is that the chicken "loves" him. My husband named his particular chicken, 'Kevin'. I guarrantee 'Kevin' will not be without heat this winter & AC next summer. (He's still inside in the brooder right now.)
My husband was just telling me last night how a swamp cooler would be a good idea for the birds lol!

Thanks for the thoughts on peafowl shelter. I was pretty sure they didn't need much, just don't want them to be struggling through a major ice storm. I have yet to see a coon out here, think the coyotes & bobcats might have eaten them all. I ordered aviary netting last night & hoping DH will have all the poles & such in the ground before it arrives. However, with this awful heat I will understand if it waits until September or later.

A swamp cooler would work nice, the trick is I have to let DH think it is his idea, that is when it seems to work best!

We will be @ the cement sale, going to bring a dozen or so lavender keets. Think I have a lavender girl sitting on a nest. Looked for the past 2 days & can't find the nest but her mate is in the same place each day guarding & making all kinds of noise. DH even went & looked with me, but they have hidden the nest REAL good.

The shade loving flower bed has now become part of the new "chicken lounge" aka the back yard by the garden and wood shed. It stays shady most of the day there.

How many chickens does it take to turn on the sprinkler ? Hmm, no one seems to want to be the 1st to get wet.
