***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Amy - I've only been to a few of the auctions myself and when I did go, I just went up to folks and asked if they were BYCers. Eventually I found someone who was and they introduced me to the others. A few of them will wear the POOPS t-shirts and can be identified that way, too. The BYCers I have met have all been nice, helpful folks.

Thanks upcdayz! Now for my next question... what's a poops t-shirt? lol

did I mention I'm new here?

I
just found this on another message board and thought some of you might find it interesting. I find it exasperating, scary and sad that this is all too often how situations are handled anymore. People who know nothing about it, making decisions and no doubt making matters much much worse. This isn't the first instance I've seen of law enforcement going in to someone's farm and basically taking away their livelihood. *sigh*

Ohhh, I understand that sentiment and Mr. Winchester! We have lost a total of 2 adult laying hens, 6 chicks, one bantam cochin to doggies here in the neighborhood. I'm keeping my camera handy - seems to scare the dogs when it flashes several pics in a row...also gives me some proof for the sheriff's men! Only have a bb gun, but it does sting 'em. We've had pit/boxer mix, black lab and some other mutt getting in. Don't want to kill 'em, but they just gotta quit eating dinner/breakfast at our house!

Sorry we didn't meet you tonight. Sept 10...?

Try roasting turnips in the oven. just coat them with a little olive oil, add salt and pepper or a few herbs and put them in a 325* till tender. They are so sweet. I don't like boiled turnips either. Roasted is another story. Beets are good roasted too but turnips are so different, and better, roasted.

10 bantams means 12 feet or roost space and at least a 5x10 pen. Otherwise you may have crowding issues. That provides 5 sq. fr per bird they say 3 sq ft per bantam but I like to give a little extra space to be safe. But based on your post and my math skills I only count 7 chickens divide by 4 since bantams and you have 1.75 chickens. Robin you need more birds to put in any pen.

He, he ,he!

love that math!

At 2 to 2 1/2 mo. my Cochin's genders are hard too tell apart. Seems the pullet's combs have growth spurts. Only some of my roos act out and crow early. One little Mottled is trying to crow at less than 4 weeks though!

I love doing projects like that. Well I did untill I finished my penn and mini coops this summer. I'm really happy with them but they wore me out. I'm sure I'll get the "creative solution" bug again by Fall.
I turned an old garden hose box into a little coop - Tore out all the reel system, cut open the front, put 1/2" hardware cloth in the bottom and braced it up off the ground, added a roost. It is cozy for a pair or trio of my bantams. A little pullet is already sitting on a couple of eggs in it.

Any time you want to let one of us hold your bid card we can be even more "helpful" You could go home with LOTS of great birds.

Morning everyone. Being lazy so far. Haven't even been out to check on critters yet. Restlaess night so I'm tired already.

Nana we are alike on the using screws on putting pens together. I hardly ever use nails anymore. With screws I can take them apart and reuse material and screws and have very little waste. Thoe battery screw guns and saws are a great investment for chicken people!

Sounds like everyone had a great time at the sale last night.

Jarvis's sounds like you all are getting the cupboard stocked for winter. Have you ever tried making pear preserves? They are my favorite. I need to make some more this year. I'm sure it will fit into my diabetics diet! NOT! lol

Another raccoon attack last night dispels our hope we had only the one pair. They got the silver duckwing OEGB roo and his six youngsters. Only the hen survived. That pen is built well and should have withstood an attack, but the latch sometimes springs open without our realizing it, which undoubtedly is what happened. They also sprang one trap without getting trapped in it. Vashi was ready to quit baiting and setting traps, but no more.
