***OKIES in the BYC III ***

A long time friend of ours raised meat rabbits and made a 100 x 20 foot pen with big PVC pipi as the underground runs for the younger rabbits to get in out of the sun/heat. The also had an underground building with PVC pipes for the rabbit entries but had an above ground door for access by the humans. I know I don't have any photos and they were in their 80s so ill try to draw a diagram and post it.

KASS- that incredible blue on your araucanas, does it ever transfer if you cross breed ?. It is such an incredible colour, does it appear on any other breed?

Ari doesn't have any blue? I haven't hatched any eggs from him, he just got old enough to start mounting the girls this week.

We have been breeding meat rabbits for a year now. Our first round was successful but our second generation we haven't been able to get pregnant yet. Not sure why. They are a lot easier and cheaper than the birds really except during the hot part of summer when they drop like flies if it gets over 90. Ice bottles help but we ended up putting an air conditioner in the house for them. Of course 118 degree temps aren't normal either ... sigh. I'm going to do some research on what you're doing to see if we can figure out how to do something for underground housing too.
So guess "breeding like bunnies" isn't always true????

Yes everything I've read says how hard hot weather is for them, and I so wasn't even going to do the air conditioning thing, but when I came across the idea for underground dens, it is a method they are using for poor hot areas to help people be able to feed their families, areas that don't even have air conditioning for themselves let alone meat animals. There are much simpler methods of making underground dens, but I already was wanting to do a version of hugelkulture garden beds so I thought it would be a great combo.

What breed of meat buns do you guys raise?

Nanakat a drawing would be cool.

I went back and looked at the pics, I think what you are seeing as blue is actually black but he is extremely irradescent and shines violet and green in his black feathers, his coppery orange feathers are metallic looking, they are that bright and shiney. While I have not hatched any eggs from him, I can say he looks a great deal like his father. Banjoe has his father

Hey guys just checking in all the pages look different guess it's mobile mode. Nana I'll have to get that conditioning feed recipe when I can think more clearly lots of nice pictures from everyone hate to read about all losses always seems to happen every time the seasons change no matter how hard we work to treat our birds well.
Surgery went well they actually got out all my tumor & had to take out my appendix also. Taking a few days to get the pain meds under control but seem to be on the right path. Still waiting for pathology reports not sure if I will get them this afternoon. I'll check back in in a few days thanks so much for all your thoughts and prayers.

Christina, SO very glad to see your screen name come up and know the surgery is over. Fingers are still crossed for pathology, thank you for taking the time to let us know.

Robin, I don't even know what to say about Joe. I'm just shocked and I know how devastated you are. I'm sitting in a big recliner with Channing snuggled up in his special blanket right in the crook of my arm ready to watch a movie with me. I read the sentence about Joe and it gave me chills. I was so fond of him because he was Channings brother (for all practical purposes). Channing is my 2nd favorite beloved pet in over 50 yrs of pet ownership. It hits way too close to home you losing Joe like that out of the blue. I'm so very sorry.

Robin so sorry about Joe.
